Smith has seen Brandon Isaiah.
It has seen Paul McGee.
It has seen Lashun Peoples.
Tonight when the Golden Eagles (8-3) play at Havelock, they will see two college-bound runningbacks. Havelock's duo of Marcus Frazier and Chris Moore have both run for 1,000 yards during the Rams' 9-2 season. Frazier, a 6-foot-1, 212-pound senior, recently ran for 242 yards, a school record, in a loss to Little Washington. Frazier averages 106 yards per game. Moore, a 6-1, 200-pound junior, averages 105 yards per game.
"Havelock runs the I-formation and Frazier is a tough, strong, big runner," Smith coach Tony McKee said after a recent practice. "He's more like Isaiah or McGee than Peoples. He will knock you down hard."
Smith had troubles with a straight-ahead runner in last week's 21-14 Piedmont Triad 3-A loss to Carver. Peoples' running mate, Tavaris Gregg, raced for 168 yards on 30 carries. Gregg had three touchdowns.
"Our tackles have to do a better job this week," McKee said. "We struggled with Carver's off-tackle play."
Coach Wilbur Sasser's Havelock team finished second behind Washington's Pam Pack in its conference, the Coastal 3-A. Smith also finished second. Washington defeated Havelock 24-19 on Oct. 29.
The Rams are coming off a 23-0 win over West Craven last week.
Smith quarterback Duane Taylor threw for 104 yards and two touchdowns last week. Taylor finished the regular season with 1,293 yards passing and 13 TDs.
Fullback J.J. Thompson has been the Golden Eagles' leading rusher all season long. The sophomore has run for 811 yards and two touchdowns. Thompson had 69 yards on 16 carries in the loss to Carver. McKee largely ignored Thompson's number in the second half after the Yellowjackets gained a 14-0 halftime lead.
Smith's defense is led by the linebacker corps of P.J. Southerland, Shamaree Brown and Wesley Tyler, who have combined for 342 tackles, four fumble recoveries, three interceptions and five sacks.
The winner of tonight's 7:30 (EST) game will play the Clayton-Hertford winner in next Friday's second round.
