HAVELOCK -- Smith defeated Havelock 31-27 Friday night in the first round of the NCHSAA 3-A football playoffs.
The Golden Eagles (9-3) will travel to top-seeded Clayton (11-0) next week. Clayton defeated Hertford 28-7 in the first round.
Sophomore J.J. Thompson scored two touchdowns to lead the Golden Eagles. The fullback scored the game's first TD, on a three-yard run in the first quarter. Then his two-yard plunge with 1:17 left lifted the Eagles past their Coastal 3-A foe.
Smith's other two touchdowns came on a 30-yard run by tailback Dasharn Rusell and a one-yard sneak by quarterback Duane Taylor.
Perhaps the game's biggest play, though, was a 26-yard field goal by senior placekicker Brian Woodward that gave BLS a 10-7 halftime lead. Woodward made only his second field goal of the season, but it was a big one since each team scored four touchdowns.
Havelock (9-3) was led by 1,000-yard tailbacks Marcus Frazier, who had two TDs, and Chris Moore, who scored once. Quarterback Chad Stokes also hit wideout J.D. Scott for a 66-yard score.
Smith totaled 359 yards in offense. That included 23 first downs. The Eagles had no turnovers and Taylor, BLS's all-time leading passer, completed 10-of-21 for 152 yards.
Brandon Summers, a defensive end, sealed the verdict with a sack of Stokes in the last minute of the game.
Smith, seeded ninth and the No. 2 team from the Piedmont Triad Conference, now has won nine games for the first time since 1986. Coach Tony McKee's teams are 16-7 the last two seasons, the best two-year period at BLS since 1985-86 when the Eagles went 19-5.
Kickoff for next Friday night's game in Clayton will be at 7:30 (EST).
All the Piedmont Triad entries into the 3-A playoffs won Friday night. Defending state champion Carver beat Goldsboro 34-16 and Parkland edged Wilson Fike 32-31. Parkland (8-3) plays at Carver (10-2) next Friday. The Yellowjackets won the regular-season meeting between the two teams.
Parkland's Brandon Isaiah rushed for 203 yards on 47 carries Friday night. Isaiah had three second-half touchdowns. The senior tailback scored on runs of 20, four and two yeards. He now has 2,143 yards for the season with 26 touchdowns. His 2,143 yards breaks the school record previously held by Kennard Martin.
Parkland scored the winning two-point conversion on a trick play. Isaiah's final touchdown carry cut the Mustangs' deficit to a 31-30. On the conversion, Parkland lined up for an extra-point kick, but Thomas Johnson caught a pass from Parrish Reinhart for the final margin.
