The unbeaten Smith girls are ranked No. 1 in the region by the Greensboro News & Record.
After beating Western Guilford 68-43 in the finals of the Little Four at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center Dec. 29, they have made a good case for being ranked No. 1 in the state.
Senior Jackie Wood, a center, scored 24 points to lead BLS to the title. Wood was named the tournament's MVP.
"She is a polished player," Smith coach Bullard said.
The Eagles got the ball inside all night long against the Western zone and Wood continually got good shots.
"What we do works when we do it," Bullard said.
In addition to getting the ball inside to Wood, the Lady Golden Eagles (11-0)also play a tenacious fullcourt press. It disrupted the Lady Hornets' offense.
Guard Tamisha Seagroves added 20 points and forward Nicole Patterson had 11 for Smith.
The key to the game was a 17-2 Smith third quarter. The Lady Eagles had led 29-22 at the half.
Karli Eller led Western (4-6) with 16 points.
In the boys' final, Dudley rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Smith 67-63.
JoJo McLaughlin led the Eagles (7-5) with 14 points. Sean Mapp added 13.
The Golden Eagles' foul shooting spelled the difference. Smith missed 11-of-16 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Dominique Brown led Dudley (10-1) with 17 points. Eric Hicks added 14.
