Indoor track meet in trouble

Staff report
(First published Dec. 2, 1999)

The NCHSAA Board of Directors tentatively voted to have the state indoor track meet in Greensboro for a fourth straight year.

However, the meet will be cancelled if the Greensboro community does not come up with $15,000 to stage the Feb. 26 event.

Smith has competed in the indoor meet since its inception and has won both individual and team championships. Boys' track coach Chris Lassiter said it would be a major blow to the Golden Eagle track program is the meet was not held.

"We look forward to it each year," he said. "We have a rich tradition in it."

(First published Nov. 18, 1999)

Smith senior Jackie Wood signed with Georgia State last Friday.

The girls' basketball player is a transfer from North Rowan, where she averaged 17 points as a junior. Wood had also been considering Louisiana Tech.

The addition of Wood to an already potent Smith lineup has the Lady Eagles seeded first for next month's Little Four basketball tournament at the Coliseum Special Events Center.

The Smith boys are seeded fourth in the Little Four.
