Ida Rolf and Structural Integration

"In the 1930's, unsatisfied with the available medical treatment, Dr. Rolf explored Osteopathy, Chiropractic Medicine, Tantric Yoga, the Alexander Technique and Korzybski's work on the consciousness."

"Dr. Ida Rolf was the founder of Structural Integration. In 1920 she earned her Ph.D. in Bio-chemistry from the college of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. She also studied mathematics and atomic phyics in Zurich."[from a Guild of Structrual Integration pamphlett

Rolfing, or Structural Integration style of bodywork, was influenced by Reich's theories. (Wilhelm Reich was Freud's brightest pupil at one time). Reich wrote some influential books back in the 30's. Some of them were burned by the Food and Drug Administration in the 50's.

The main premise of Reich's Early work was that the mind and body are not separate things. The mind is ddistributed throughout the body to a point that there is no strong dividing line between mind and body.He also observed that for every neurotic thought, there was a chronic physical symptom mirroring it.You may have noticed that neck tension is associated with anxiety, for example. The process of "Rolfing" or structural integration was influenced by Reich early work:
