Acropolis

Athens began around 3000 B.C. as a small fortified city in the plains of Attica. It was first named Kekropia after then ruler King Kekropos.

Virtual tour

Kekropia was situated on a flat-topped rocky hill known as the Acropolis,156.2 metres above sea level, measuring 330 metres in length at the base and 270 metres at the summit. Its steep sides made it easily defendable, something of major importance in ancient times. As Athens grew, the function of the Acropolis changed; yet the Acropolis, which means "high city", has always been the heart of Athens, first because it was an excellent natural barrier against enemies, later on because of its cultural and religious functions. In time rulers were the only ones left living on it, but even the most powerful eventually had to make place for the temples of Athena.

In much the same way, Geocities' Athens Community changes and grows through the creative efforts of Athens geocitizens. Acropolis Park was founded by the Community Leaders of Athens as a public place where we can showcase not only our own talents but also those of homesteader throughout the Athens Community who are cooperating in public-spirited group projects. Enjoy your stay in Acropolis Park, don't forget to place all litter in proper receptacles, and please plan to visit again soon!
