"A Message from the Spirit to Every Pastor"
November-December 1996
The Bible is the "Word of God"... where did that come from?
Jesus came to liberate God's people from the false religious "doctrines and traditions" of Israel's elders; traditions which God did not ordain. When Jesus said, "my yoke is easy and my burden is light", it was a great relief to the people. That's what they were looking for. Though the common man could not understand exactly what it was that was making them feel so "heavy", they welcomed the relief that Jesus brought to them. Today, one of the "heavy burdens" laid upon the children of God is the notion that "the Bible is the Word of God". Pastor, just where did that "doctrine" come from? Why does the Bible itself never say that the Word of God is something one "reads"? What the diligent reader will find is that the Word of God is always something that is heard. The Word of God is what God says, just as your word is what you say. The Word of God comes from God's mouth (read Deut.8:3; Isa.45:23; Jer.9:20). The Bible on the other hand, is the divinely inspired record of the history which occurred when the Word of God came to various individuals. The Bible is a record written by faithful men; men who would not lie.
The Word of God came "saying"...
The Word of God came to many righteous individuals "saying". Here are some of them: The Word came to Abram "saying"... (Gen.15:1,4); The Word came to Samuel "saying"... (1Sam.15:10); The Word came to David "saying"... (1Chron.22:8); The Word came to Isaiah "saying"...(2Kings 20:4). And there are many more not listed here. God's Word is a spoken thing. The Lord spoke the Word to Moses, and He was not quoting the scriptures; it was entirely new information. Jesus spoke the Word of God, and though he often quoted the law and the prophets, much of what he spoke was new to mankind (Mt.5:21, 27-28; John 13:34, etc.). The Word of God is something that is spoken to men, and then, the content of that Word is delivered by those men either orally, or in writing to others. In the Bible we find that when the Word of God came, it revealed something about the will of God that man did not know previously. Satan's influence...
Despite the reverence for God which appears to attend the somber declaration that the Bible is "the infallible Word of God", that declaration sprouts from the envious heart of Satan, who would rather glory in the works of men - even the Bible, the written work of righteous men - than to glory in the living power of God. It is Satan who inspired that unknown minister to first proclaim that the "Bible is the Word of God". His evil purpose was to discourage fervent prayer, and to discourage men from expecting answers from God Himself; that is, to have men simply "read the Bible" rather than to humbly prepare their hearts to receive the "living Word" from God's own mouth. In short, a "heavy burden" has been laid on God's people by replacing their dependence on the life and joy that comes only through the power of God - the holy Ghost - while they grope for life from a book that can never give life, for: "the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life" (1Cor.3:6). The life-giving Word of God is the light, the guidance of God which comes through the leading of the holy Ghost. For this reason the Spirit is called the Word of God (Eph.6:17). The "Word of God" is what God is saying to us this moment; not yesterday, and not two thousand years ago. While God never changes, we need only to read the Scriptures themselves to see that His instructions to man have changed many times, and God is still directing us today! "He whom God hath sent, speaketh the
words of God" (John 3:34). Those who
preach that the Bible is the Word of
God have not been sent by God,
because God never said that the Bible
was His Word. Those who preach this
"tradition" are merely teaching what
they have heard from other men, for
that is where the "Bible is God's
Word" doctrine comes from: men.
One can claim to have the Word of
God if it is a book. Doing so excuses
their lack of a testimony of
experiencing the true Word being
spoken to them. Pastor, our cry to
you is to fall on your knees and cry
out to God for His true Word for you
and your congregation. His Word is
calling the Church out of every
religious tradition that we might be
made free through the power of the
holy Ghost. Our Bibles will never set a
soul free; but that which comes by
holy Ghost truly will: "...My preaching
was not with enticing words of man's
wisdom, but in demonstration of the
Spirit and of power" (1Cor.2:4-5). What is the Word of God
saying today?
The real Word of God is saying that
the Church must worship "in Spirit and
in truth". That means we must leave
behind every "spiritual" weight and sin
which so easily besets us. While we
have readily been willing to leave
behind the sins of the "flesh", we are
slow to leave behind the sins of the
"spirit": "Having therefore these promises,
dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves
from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit,
prefecting holiness in the fear of God
(2Cor.7:1).
One of the sins that must be
cleansed from our fellowship is the
false idea that a person can be "born
of the Spirit" prior to being baptized
with the Spirit (with the evidence of
speaking in other tongues). There is
no such thing in the kingdom of God. "...Now if any man have not the Spirit of
Christ, he is none of His"(Rom.8:9). It
is because we have rejected the power
of God that He has turned many over
to "strong delusion", and as we have
seen, "the Bible being the Word of
God" is one of them. We have held a
death-like grip to the Bible, as we
relegated to a second-place position,
our only life-giving communion with
God: the holy Ghost. Pastor, it would
help you to send for our free
materials , and by the power of God,
together, lets lift the burdens God's
people deserve to be free from. We would like to send you our "Sampler Tract Packet" consisting of 20 gospel tracts and a cassette tape. It is free of charge to all calling or writing.
