When most people think of fairies (or faerie, depending on who you're talking to), they imagine spritely fluttering beings, all a-glow with light and mischief. But that's only one type of faerie. These spirits come in all shapes and sizes, and each one has special attribues.
What follows is a listing of some of the more common spirits in Italian folklore, as well as a little bit about each one. If you know of any I've forgotten (or just plain don't know about!) let me know!
Folletto: They travel in the wind, and can be seen at play, causing swirls in the dust. The Folletto are said to be like butterflies and are always moving about. They are generally friendly towards humans, but can be mischevious and annoying. It is not uncommon for them to lift up a woman's dress in the wind, or knock over objects with a sudden gust.
Fata: Spirits of the Woods and Water. They are beautiful, gentle and kind, and are excellent shape-shifters.
Lare: The Lare are clan spirits who protect the homes and families of the Streghe. They help preserve family blood lines and traditions. The Lare also assist Streghe to be reborn again among those whom they have known and loved in a previous life.
Lasa: The Lasa are the Elemental beings of the West. They are Spirits of Elemental Water. They have influence over inner motivation, the subconscious, life fluids, and the like. In Tuscan Witchlore, they are the first spirits known in the World. They are protections and helpers in the Spirit World, and can be evoked for assistance.
Linchetto: Elven spirits, more specifically, night elves. They are said to cause nightmares and odd noises in the night. They hate disorder, and will not dwell in any such element.
Palos: Palos are the Elemental Beings of the Norht. They are very etheric and have influence over mental processes, creativity, thought, concepts, etc.
Settiano Elemental Beings of the West. They are Spirits of Elemental Fire. The Settiano have power over activity, motion, and vitality.
