I make no claims to being "a poet", but I have fun trying the genre sometimes, anyway! Here's one of my short ones that I like:
The Alternative
The snow rests patiently on the fencepost,
Waiting either to blow away or to melt.
Then up comes the thirsty horse with rough tongue.
Other Writing of Mine: See my essay, "Depression Personalized: an Attempt to Explain Depression to the Non-depressed" and my fantasy-adventure segment, "The Lesson".

Two great books on how to both learn and write better are by William Zinsser: On Writing Well and Writing to Learn. Resources
A really good textbook (used in the past at the University of Washington, I believe) for developing more effective writing skills (including a very painless study of grammar and punctuation): Combining & Creating; Sentence Combining and Generative Rhetoric. By William L. Stull, from Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, copyright 1983. (paperback)
