The Night We Called the Sheriff
By Chrissy

Bang! Rattle! Boom!

“I think someone is coming,” Marie said to her little sister, Nicole.

Marie and Nicole were in their living room playing cards. Marie was 12 and Nicole was 5. Marie was in the 6th grade. She had blonde hair, green eyes, and glasses. Nicole was in kindergarten. She had brown hair and blue eyes. Their parents went on a vacation and they could not take their children with them.

“Stand back,” said Marie to her little sister.

“What is it?”

“ I don’t know. Look out the window. There is nothing out there.”

“ Then what was that?”

“I don’t know.”

Marie dialed 9-1-1.

The sheriff answered, “What do you need?”

“I think someone or something is at my house.”

“Where do you live?”

“I live on EAGLE Rd.”

Are your mommy or daddy there?”

“ No. They’re on a vacation and couldn’t take us.”

“Us, who’s us?”

“ My sister and I. Now could you get over here?”

“ I’ll be right over.”

About 30 minutes later he got there. He knocked on the door.

Marie answered, “You finally got here.”

“ So what was the noise?”

“ It was BANG, RATTLE, BOOM. There it went again.”

“ I’ll go look what it was.”

He went outside. He yelled, “There is nothing out here!” and came back in.

“I guess your going to leave.” Marie said.

“Yep. I’ll see you folks later.”

“Thanks for coming.”

“You’re welcome.”

When he left they heard it again BANG, RATTLE, BOOM.

“AHHHHHHHHH!” screamed Nicole. “Hurry go upstairs, I’m going to see what it was.”

She opened the door and looked out. Nothing was out there. She ran up the stairs. She went in her sister’s room out of breath. There was nothing out there as usual.

“Then this is like a mystery, right?” said Nicole.

“Right.”

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK Someone was at the door!

They both ran down stairs. Marie opened the door.

“Mommy,” yelled Nicole.

“Daddy,” yelled Marie.” So how did your trip go?” Asked Marie.

“It went just fine,” said Daddy.

“Mommy I’m tried,” said Nicole.

“OK, let’s go to bed,” said Mommy.

Next day
When they woke up they looked outside just in case something was out there. Nothing was out there, so they went out. They looked round the house, Marie found footsteps in the mud.

She yelled, “I think I found something!”

Nicole came running over to her sister.

Marie said, “They look like prints from boots.”

Then the girls noticed the trash cans all tipped over. They stood them back up where they belonged.

Nicole saw something shiny laying in a bush.

“It looks like a badge, but I don’t know,” said Nicole.

Marie came over and got it down.

“It is a badge! It says: Deputy Sheriff.”

Marie and Nicole went back into the house and called the Sheriff’s department. They told the dispatcher about the badge. The dispatcher sent the deputy out to Marie and Nicole’s house to get his badge.

When he got there, they asked him if he had been there yesterday. He said that he was there, because their mom and dad called and sent him to check on the house.

The deputy said, “I tripped over your trash cans. That must be when I lost the badge.”

Marie said, “That must be the noise we heard last night!”
