The Materials

Incenses are made of a variety of leaves, flowers,
roots, barks, woods, resins, gums, and oils.Semi-precious
stones may also be added to incense to add their energies
to the mixture. The most commonly used herbs to keep in stock are:
                 Frankincense Pine needles
                  Myrrh Juniper
                 Benzoin Sandalwood
                  Copal Cedar
                 Rose Petals Thyme
                  Bay Basil
                 Cinnamon Rosemary

The Two Forms of Incense

There are two kinds of incense that is used in magic: the
combustible and non-combustible.
Combustible incense can be burned in the form of bricks, cones, sticks,
and other shapes like the incense
you find in the stores. Non-combustible incense is
placed or sprinkled onto a glowing charcoal blocks
to release its fragrance. This kind of incense is the
easiest to make.

Combustible Incense

Ok. This kind of incense is hard to make and takes
ALOT of patience. Getting the incense composition right
isn't a piece of pie. The procedure is messy and timely,
and the ingredients are hard to find and expensive.
Gum tragacath glue or muilage is the basic
ingredient of all molded incenses. You could possibly
purhase it in a herb stores; the Whole foods chain
carrys it. Gum tragacath is rather expensive, but
like essential oils, it last for months. To make
tragacath glue, place a tsp. of ground herb in a
glass of warm water. Mix throughly. Let the tragacanth
absorb the water until it becomes thick, bitter
smelling paste. Finding the "right" consistency
takes practice and depends on what shape of incense
(cone, stick, & blocks). When you have made the glue,
cover with a wet cloth and set aside. It will continue
to thicken as it sits, so keep an eye on it and add a bit
of water if it gets too thick. Next, make the incense base.
See the recipes below for incense bases. First, mix one ounce
of potassium nitrate powder (for every ten oz. of incense base)
to the incense. Next, add the tragacanth glue a tsp. at
a time and mixing it with your hands until all ingredients
are wet. Then shape the mixture into cones, cut 1/3 inch-thick
squares of stiff dough on waxed paper with a knife for blocks or
dip sticks(log wooded cocktail skewers, broom straws,
very thin twigs) into the mixture & let them sit up right
repeat this progess for several dippings to create stick
incense. Now I suggest if you are really interested in
making combustible incense that you pick up a couple of
books on the subject magickal and arts & crafts books. I don't
have much experience with combustible incense and I'm
still learning about the process. Good Luck!

Non-combustible Incense

Each ingredient must be ground to a powder, using a
mortar and pestle or an electric grinder. Some resins
like Frankincense, Copal, Myrrh, etc., will not ground
up very easily, it takes practice and experience.
Make sure to fix your mind on the incense's
goal- love, protection, dreams, healing, throughout the
incense making process. First, mix the resin and the gums
together with your hands. Visualize your personal
power exiting your hands and entering the incense.
The next step is to mix in all powdered leaves, barks,
flowers, and roots. Then add any oils or liquids such as
wine or honey, that are included in the recipe.
A few drops should do. Beware that oils that aren't
essential oil may smell bad depending what percent
is synthetics oil. Most oil labels will read 100% essential
oil, but ingredents read differently. The incense
is now fully compounded. Enpower the incense and it
is done. Keeps best in a tightly capped jar and
remember to label it with the name and date.
Incense should last about a year, depending on its content,
at its full magickal potenial. I personally use this incense
the most because it is simple and easy to make and I can
grind herbs almost anywhere. Good Luck!
