Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery...established in 1850, holds the remains of Civil War soldiers hastily buried in mass graves (where ghostly roll calls are sometimes still heard). You'll also find the grave of prominent Atlanta citizen, "Gone With the Wind" author, Margaret Mitchell.

From the GHHT Guestbook: "I was born and raised in the area near Oakland Cemetery. Cabbage Town runs beside it, and the Old Mill Village. Back in the early 1900's, part of the cemetery was dug up to make roads, Memorial Dr. on one side, and Boulevard Ave. on the other. I knew an old timer who helped remove the coffins for the building of the roads. He said some of the coffins were burned because they fell apart. Oakland is alot older than recored, the oldest, unmarked graves were the ones removed. I also recall that a man was once found hung in the cemetery near side the wall at the corner of the two streets. Sincerely, Carol Vershure, Atlanta, GA"
