Regimental Battle Flag, Walthall's Brigade

This flag was captured from Walthall's Mississippi Brigade at the Battle of Lookout Mountain by Peter Kappesser of the 149th New York Infantry. My gr. gr. uncle, Allen Franklin Vick, was also captured with many other of his compatriots, on 24 November 1863. On 29 November he arrived at the Federal prison in Louisville, Ky., he stayed there until he was moved on 1 December 1863 to the Federal Military Prison at Rock Island, Ill. He was released for exchange on 20 March 1865.

During the closing days of the war the Thirty- Fourth Mississippi Infantry was consolidated with the Twentieth, Twenty-Seventh, Twenty-Ninth, and Thirtieth Mississippi Infantry Regiments. The unit formed by this consolidation was designated the Twenty-Fourth Mississippi Consolidated Infantry. Under this designation the members of the the Thirty-Fourth Mississippi Infantry surrendered.
