The Bird Winged Butterfly
The bird-winged butterfly is the biggest butterfly
in the whole world. It has a wingspan of 28cm. In fact, because
of its size and very high flight, the first specimen was brought down by
a shotgun blast. The female bird-winged butterfly is larger then
the male. You can find this butterfly only in the rainforest.
This rare butterfly is found only in the very small region in Southeastern
Papua New Guinea. Its habitats are threatened by the expansion of
oil-palm plantations. Farmers are cutting down the rainforest trees
for trees that produce palm oil. These butterflies are found in the
forest margins, but need the rainforest to live. Very little is known
about them.
