OCELOTS
Ocelots are medium
sized cats with gray coats marked with brown spots or blotches and dark
stripes on their neck. They are extensively shot or trapped for their
fur. Little is known about their lives. They are extinct in the southern
regions of the United States. They live in thick forests and spend
most of their time in the canopy of the trees. They sleep by day
and emerge at dusk to hunt for small animal’s birds and reptiles.
Their prey also includes some of the larger ground living rodents such
as pacas and agoutis as well as monkeys and piglike peccaries.
Ocelots run down their prey rather than ambush them.
