The Britannic was one of the 2 sister ships to the Titanic. Originally built to be a luxury liner, the Britannic was used in war times. After the sinking of the Titanic production was stopped on the Britannic so they could modify it to improve it. They didn't want the same mistake twice. The Britannic became the biggest of the 3 sister ships and was set to sail on February 26, 1914. The Britannic became a hospital ship in 1915 to transport wounded and sick patients back to England. The Britannic made it successfully 5 times, but on the 6th voyage she never made it home. On November 21, 1916, the Britannic went down. The Britannic was carrying sick and wounded passengers through the Kea Channel (Not far from Athens) when around 8 a.m. there was an explosion. No one knows if a torpedo hit the hospital ship or if it ran upon a mine. Fifty - five minutes after the explosion the Britannic sank.
The time that the ship had sunk was very surprising to many people. The Britannic was supposed to be safer after they modified it due to the Titanic sinking, yet it sank faster than the Titanic. As soon as the people on board knew that something was wrong they began loading lifeboats. However, the ships captain was not aware of this and started the ship back up so they could try to make it to shore before the ship sank. Lifeboats full of people were sucked into the propeller; thirty people lost their lives because of this. Some people saw what was coming so they jumped out of the lifeboats and swam to get away from the propellers. To date no one knows what really caused the Britannic to sink and why it sank so fast.
