Tarantulas

Just the thought of spiders makes me shiver all over.  I hate spiders.  You can imagine how I felt when we saw a tarantula and her babies crossing the highway in front of our car.  This was somewhere in New Mexico.  I did not say they were cute like I would have if I had seen a family of ducks crossing the road.  They are very scary looking spiders.  Tarantulas belong to a group of  large, hairy spiders.  They are found in the southern and western parts of the United States.  Some tarantulas are said to have lived as long as 20 year!!

One type of tarantula is the bird spider which is said to live in trees and eat small birds.  It can spread its legs about 7 inches apart.  That is some spider!

Even though we often fear tarantulas, it is said that the bite is no more dangerous to humans than the sting of a bee.  I don't care to find out for myself.

If you want to learn more about this spider, you may want to use an encyclopedia or browse on the Internet for more information.
