Talking Trash in the
      Classroom

Did You Ever Feel Like This ??. . . .

Or Have You Ever Seen This ??

Whether driving or walking, how much trash do you see ?
Our class decided to see what would happen if every student just picked up one piece of trash every day for a week.
So. . . outside we were for five days each student picking up just one piece of trash. Each day we weighed our collection, and reviewed the past days. On Friday, we reviewed the weights of all five collections.

Here's what we discovered.
        Day                     Weight (in grams)
    Monday                            2,240 kg.
    Tuesday                              1,425 kg.
    Wednesday                          2,500 kg.
    Thursday                            2,240 kg.
    Friday                               3,600 kg.
Our total                           12,005 kg. or 38.146 oz.

The daily average                 2,401 kg, or 7.68 oz.
The weekly student average was400.16 kg or 1.28 oz.
The daily student average was    80.03 kg or .25 oz.

We then calculated that if each student picked up an average of .25 oz., then our class picked up 2.4 lbs for the week. Orchard School of Science has 25 classrooms. If every classroom did this activity for a week, 60 pounds of trash would be off of the streets around the school !
How much cleaner would our city be if every school copied this activity for just a week!
