The (not so) great Creation debate
(Letter to "The Salvationist" 31.08.02)
It is rather depressing to see yet another round of the (not so) great
creation debate starting in the Salvationist. Why is this still an issue? If God created the universe in 7 days or 70 billion years, is he not the
Creator either way? If God used the mechanisms of evolution or specifically designed each and every species, is it not all his work anyway? If the Ark really was "large enough to contain 478 double-decker buses", or the the whole story of Noah is a folk memory like the epic of Gilgamesh, how does that change the spiritual
content of the story? Instead of perpetuating a fruitless debate, perhaps
we could concentrate on what we all agree on: God is the "Creator,
Preserver and Governor" of the Universe, and he offers us his love in
Jesus Christ. That, surely, is what we want our children to learn. And we
can teach them that without making life hard for them in science classes.
The mechanics of creation may be of interest to cosmologists, but they
have no real bearing on our faith. So why debate them?
