Midwinter Message from the Hopi Elders
Wed, 22 Dec 1999 22:32:25

To my fellow swimmers:

"There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift, that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and will suffer greatly. Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water. And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate.

"At this time in history, we are to take nothing personal. Least of all, ourselves.
For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

"The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves!

"Banish the word "struggle" from your attitude and your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
WE ARE THE ONES WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR."

The Native Truth
A column dedicated to historical truth and human rights activism of the American Indian.

"...Let's face it: American history textbooks were (and sometimes are still) full of lies, stereotypes and misconceptions in relation to the Native American Indian. Such books were written by the so-called victor - the white invader - who rewrote history to suit his own needs. It wasn't until the 1960's did the Native people begin to speak out.. telling their side of the story. Unfortunately, White Lies are still retold today and misconceptions held by those before us still hold tight to the American conscious. Knowledge is the key to changing such deep-seeded assumptions - and re-education is needed to correct the misinformation. I hope you will join me and read THE NATIVE TRUTH. Here we will explore the other side of the historical coin - from aboriginal slavery, treaty rights and land claims to cultural theft, reservation conditions, Wounded Knee and Christopher Columbus - giving voice to those stifled for hundreds of years".

STAR has collected the most important essays written by professors, an attorney, psychologists and counselors, and many resolutions including those from the Commission on Civil Rights and State Boards of Education. There are also stories and letters from individuals who share their personal experience of growing up Native surrounded by images that were meant to honor and represent them but ultimately mocked and degraded them.

STAR's new website seeks to bring further understanding by providing educational links to many sites that contain curriculum approved by Native Americans. There are also links that show history and civil rights from the Native perspective".

Winds that Whisper
"...Winds that Whisper was established with several goals and dreams in mind. One being to create opportunities for American Indian artists, craftmasters, musicians, authors, etc. Those whom opportunity perhaps has not afforded itself. In addition to do our best to provide a means for them to reach people with their talents, we have several programs that we hope will be for the betterment of our people. We have a mentoring program for our youth, we plan on working with some of the adopt-an-elder programs that are available, working to connect people with others who have been successful in finding their "lost" children or parents, and many more.

We are continuously and actively seeking those who are looking for a good place to promote and sell on our site their American Indian handmade crafts and other fruits of their talents. It is our dream that in the future, we will have "real life" stores, therefore offering employment opportunities for our people.

Another part of the dream...to afford a better understanding of our American Indian Nations and their culture, in the hope that understanding will bring about harmony between the different cultures.

So for those of you looking to buy some of the finest handcrafted American Indian items from across the entire USA, and for those of you who are the artisans, authors, etc., and would like to promote those talents, you have certainly found the right place. THE COALITION FOR A PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO THE DEATH OF DUDLEY GEORGE

WHAT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 6, 1995

"Dudley George was fatally wounded, on September 6, 1995, at Ipperwash Park, part of the territory granted to the Stoney Point People as Reserve #43. Three Ontario Provincial Police units (including their "crack" TRU Team) combined forces for the assault that night... against a few dozen protestors. Dudley, two other protestors and a family dog were shot, and another person was severely beaten by the Police. Marcia Simon, Pierre George and Carolyn George, members of Dudley's immediate family who also been integral parts of the Stoney Pointers' land rights fight, were detained in police custody that night in apparent attempts to prevent them from getting medical care for Dudley, and also from letting the world know about what the OPP had done at Stoney Point.

For weeks, the media carried stories about the "armed stand-off at Ipperwash". These stories -- that the protestors had guns -- have now been exposed as politically-motivated lies. The Sarnia court judge hearing the case against Sargeant Kenneth Deane, the Ontario Provincial Police officer accused of mortally wounding Dudley, stated clearly that he believed the police made up the stories about the guns.

Sergeant Kenneth Deane was convicted of criminal negligence. Yet, he will serve no time in jail for his crime and nor has he lost his job. Are the police sorry for their actions? Some of the police involved in this assault later produced racially-offensive souvenirs to remember their participation."

"...Perhaps the most perplexing problem in science, the nature of consciousness reflects on our very existence and relation to reality. Most approaches to the problem of consciousness see the brain as a computer, with neurons and synapses acting as switches or "bits". In this view consciousness is thought to "emerge" as a novel property of complex computation. However this approach fails to adequately deal with enigmatic features of consciousness and more radical approaches may be necessary..."

I would probably go on to suggest that, if you do not grasp what this man is trying to show then, you will never truly understand the concept of non-metrical multiplicities [which plays such an important role in my research into non-metrical image writing].

Rhizome.org
"...Rhizome.org is a nonprofit organization that presents new media art to the public, fosters communication and critical dialogue about new media art, and preserves new media art for the future.
The Rhizome.org community is geographically dispersed, and includes artists, curators, writers, designers, programmers, students, educators and new media professionals".

A rhizome is a horizontal, root-like stem that extends underground and sends out shoots to the surface. Rhizomes connect plants in a living network.

Rhizome is also a figurative term used by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari to describe non-hierarchical networks of all kinds. Here are a few quotations from their seminal book, A Thousand Plateaus.

"A rhizome as subterranean stem is absolutely different from roots and radicles. Bulbs and tubers are rhizomes... The rhizome itself assumes very diverse forms, from ramified surface extension in all directions to concretion into bulbs and tubers... We get the distinct feeling that we will convince no one unless we enumerate certain approximate characteristics of the rhizome." -p. 7
"A rhizome ceaselessly establishes connections between semiotic chains, organization of power, and circumstances relative to the arts, sciences, and social struggles." -p.7
"Multiplicities are rhizomatic, and expose arborescent pseudomultiplicities for what they are." -p. 8
"Write, form a rhizome, increase your territory by deterritorialization, extend the line of flight to the point where it becomes an abstract machine covering the entire plane of consistency." -p. 11
"To these centered systems [arborescent structures], the authors contrast acentered systems, finite networks of automata in which communication runs from any neighbor to another, the stems or channels do not preexist, and all individuals are interchangeable, defined only by their state at a given moment--such that the local operations are coordinated and the final, global result synchronized without a central agency." -p. 17
"Let us summarize the principal characteristics of a rhizome: unlike trees or their roots, the rhizome connects any point to any other point, and its traits are not necessarily linked to traits of the same nature; it brings into play very different regimes of signs, and even nonsign states. The rhizome is reducible neither to the One nor the multiple... It is composed not of units but of dimensions, or rather directions in motion." -p. 21
"Unlike the tree, the rhizome is not the object of reproduction, neither external reproduction as image-tree nor internal reproduction as tree-structure. The rhizome is an antigenealogy. It is a short-term memory, or antimemory. The rhizome operates by variation, expansion, conquest, capture, offshoots. Unlike the graphic arts, drawing, or photography, unlike tracings, the rhizome pertains to a map that must be produced, constructed, a map that is always detachable, connectable, reversible, modifiable, and has multiple entryways and exits and its own lines of flight. It is tracings that must be put on the map, not the opposite. In contrast to centered (even polycentric) systems with hierarchical modes of communication and preestablished paths, the rhizome is an acentered, nonhierarchical, nonsignifying system with a General and without an organizing memory or central automation, defined solely by a circulation of states." -p. 21

Briarpatch features articles about people who are trying to make the world a better place for everyone who wants social justice. Briarpatch has a mission to take its readers straight to the heart of today's most important issues, exposing the evils of this world, like the free press was meant to do but isn't doing.

Briarpatch is helping to build a strong activist network, reaching out to audiences with stories the mainstream media either won't cover at all, or covers from a right-wing point of view. That's one of the reasons Maude Barlow says, "Briarpatch is one of the few voices that will still challenge the corporate agenda and present workable alternatives."

In spite of being employed in offices as “temps,” few really thought of themselves as “office workers.” More common was the hopeful assertion that they were photographers, writers, artists, dancers, historians or philosophers... from the start, the project's expressed purpose was twofold: to serve as a contact point and forum for malcontent office workers (and wage-workers in general) and to provide a creative outlet for people whose talents were blocked by what they were doing for money."

PRESS RELEASE

JUDGE SATHER'S OUT-DATED SENTENCES FOR SECWEPEMC WOMEN SCREAMS OF GENOCIDE
(Kamloops, Secwepemc Territory/October 22, 2002)

Provincial Court Judge Sather sentenced three Secwepemc Women today at Kamloops Law Courts; Nicole Manuel, the spokesperson of the Secwepemc Chapter of the Native Youth Movement, was sentenced to 45 days real jail time with one-year probation. The women were found guilty last month on Intimidation and Mischief charges incurred as a result of a roadblock they participated in at Skwelkwek'welt (Sun Peaks) in August of last year. Sather stated that he based his sentencing on the fact that "these people and people like-minded" must be discouraged and deterred from participating in further roadblocks or similar actions. His suggestion that Indigenous Peoples should be deterred and discouraged from asserting our inherent and legal right to our land is not only blatantly racist, but shows the great injustice of systemic genocide we are up against.

Nicole Manuel was released late in the day after BC Court of Appeals judge, Justice Powers, granted a stay of her sentence until their appeal is heard. After her release, Manuel stated, "Despite Sather's racist decision and sentences, we will not be deterred from our duty to defend and protect our homeland: the land is our life and without it our future generations will become landless, leading the Secwepemc to cultural and spiritual extinction. We will not let our Nation die as a result of a little jail time. NYM will continue to promote and encourage our youth to defend our land by any means necessary, including effective direct-action. Incarcerating us won't stop us from fighting the oppression of our people, it will only make us fight our oppressors harder and more brutally."

Judge Sather sentenced Miranda Dick, mother of three children including a five month old baby, to a six month conditional sentence. However, he stated that her active participation in the roadblock requires real jail time, but because she is nursing her baby, he finds it "highly unjust to incarcerate her." Miranda also got sentenced one-year probation and conditions including one that bans her from 100-meter radius of the Sun Peaks administration office and the "entrance-way to the resort." Beverly Manuel was sentenced to a suspended sentence with the same conditions as Miranda. Beverly and Miranda will be seeking a stay on their sentences until their appeal of Judge Sather's decision is heard on March 3rd, 2002.

INVITATION FOR MEDIA ATTENDANCE - PRESS CONFERENCE

TOPIC: EXPOSING NANCY GREENE RAINE'S CONFLICT OF INTEREST OVER HER POSITION AS BOARD MEMBER OF OLYMPICS BID COMMISION

Canadians for Reconciliation and representatives of Aboriginal Nations are shocked by a recent television ad promoting the 2010 Winter OLympics. The ad features Nancy Greene with captions referring to "partnership with the aboriginal people" , "respect for the environment",etc. Since such unabashful statements implying her positive relationship with Aboriginal peoples are far from the fact, CFR in conjunction with aboriginal groups are holding a press conference to
1.reflect the facts
2. report the conflict of interest of Nancy Greene as Board member of the Olympics Bid Commission
3. call for immediate steps to be taken regarding her conflict of interest
4. raise questions as to how much money the individual Olmpic promoters are allowed to benefit privately

The press conference will be held at:

DATE: Monday, February 3rd, 2003
TIME: 1:30 p.m.
PLACE: Grandview Calvary Baptist Church (1803 East 1st Ave.,Vancouver); parking at E 1st Ave. and Victoria Dr.

Canadians for Reconciliation is a peaceful non-partisan grassroot movement committed to developing a new relationship with aboriginal people, one that signifies a deep apology for past injustice, a willingness to honor truth now and a resolve to embrace each other in the new millenium.

The Secwepemc people of the Skwelkwek'welt Protection Centre have been opposing the expansion of Sun Peaks Ski Resort where Nancy Greene Raine owns a hotel. The St'at'imc people of the Sutikalh Camp oppose the construction of Cayoosh Creek Ski Resort propagated by Nancy Greene Raine and her husband Al Raine. Both groups have jointly submitted an official complaint to the International Olympic Committee regarding the potential impact of the Olympic Games on their traditional territories and the governments' and companies' violation of indigenous rights in British Columbia.

...AND ALL THE WHILE, SITUATIONS SUCH AS THESE JUST CONTINUE TO EXPAND AND ESCALATE...

Action to Stop Development at Cheam

(forward widely please)

September 19, 2003

News Release

We, some of the people and Elders of Cheam, have been voicing concerns over the development of a ski resort and logging within the Pilalt Territory.

These concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

We cannot sit back any longer and let all of the proposed development plans to proceed.

As one of our late elders said the mountains are our leaders, the mountains are our idols, the mountains are our source of food, medicine and communication, a place for us to pray, and a place of teaching and learning.

Riches are in your qualities for what you could do for your people. These were more valuable than money or gold.

Logging in Elk Mountain has already started without our consent and has been going on for approximately four days.

We have tried negotiations, litigation and written notices so far none of these tactics have worked. It does not matter what we say, governments, and big corporations go ahead and do what they want even if it means destroying someone elses life, says June Quipp, elder and former Chief of the Cheam Nation.

This attitude leaves us no other alternative than to take action to protect what is rightfully ours. This shameful theft by governments and corporations has to stop.

Any support is welcome.
