EFL Ideas

An idea for drilling.

Here's an idea for drilling. This idea works better with larger peices of dialogue. Write the dialogue up on the board and have the students drill it a few times. When they start to become familiar with it break the class into as many groups as there participants in the dialogue - if there are three people in the conversation then there should be three groups. Have the groups takes turns doing each particular part. After each recitation erase a couple of words from the board. This way the students are forced to remember the missing portions of dialogue. The drilling is finished when there are no words left on the board. By this time the students should be very familiar with the pattern of the conversation and be ready to start using it.

This exercise can be used from beginers on up. For beginners you can string three or four questions together with their answers to form the conversation. For example, How are you?, What is your name?, How many brothers/sisters do you have?, etc.

To make it more interesting for the students have each person's speech written in a different color. Then have a student from each group chose a marker. The color marker they chose is the part of the conversation that their group has. Of course you should hide the head of the marker in your hand so that nobody can see what color they are chosing until they have pulled it out of your hand. Another idea is to have a representative from each group erase one word from the whiteboard after each round of repetitions.
