In advanced classes, I explain "synopsize;" but it works at any level. Whatever text you are using, have each student summarize what is going on, or what happened in the story you have just read. You, the teacher, can help with questions (How many people are talking in this story? What are their names?) if necessary. Have each student summarize what the previous student has said. At the end of the exercise, have each student complete the whole story.I have had many students tell me that they love this exercise, love telling the complete story in their own words. Don't worry about getting all the details of the story, or grammar. Use it, more to get them talking, then an exact telling of whatever exercise you're working on. |
