Names found in “In Search of
Your Asian Roots: Genealogical Research on Chinese Surnames” by Sheau-yueh
J. Chao pp.160,170, 149 Also various searches at the website http://www.Chineseroots.com
[Shih3] (client
provided the Chinese characters for these names)~ first used as a surname
during the reign of Huang-Ti (c.259-c.210
BC).
[T’an2]~as a surname originated
in Chou dynasty (1050-256
BC).
[Po2]~also from
the Chou dynasty.
Client will NOT accept MAJOR
changes. He cares most about having a Mandarin Chinese name.
[Esct. comment: This has proven
to be a very difficult name submission to summarize effectively or even
adequately without better knowledge of Chinese. The client provided
photocopies of his searches with the Chineseroots.com search engine—unfortunately
I don’t have Chinese scripts installed (nor can I read Chinese)on my
computer so I was unable to verify these. Though his names are very
old in origin, were they used continuously and/or unaltered through
our period? Also, all three names are referred to as surnames. Are three
surnames usual or can a surname serve as a given name? ]
