Heidi (Children's Classics)

by Johanna Spyri
Reading level: Ages 9-12

Heidi is a classic.  The story of a little orphaned girl taken first to her grandfather in the Swiss Alps, then taken again to be companion to a sick girl in Frankfort, and who once again returns to the Alps.

My eight-year-old daughter loved this book, though I had to read it to her because of some of the German and place names...  Well, okay, I wanted to read it again and reading it to her and sharing it with her was one way to do it.  But, she loved it, and could read quite a bit of it herself once she got used to the names.

Read what my daughter wrote about chapter twelve (with the spelling corrected and the solution edited out, of course!)

All of a Kind Family

by Sydney Taylor
Reading level: Ages 9-12

Five sisters grow up in 1912 New York as they celebrate the festivals of the Jewish year.  In between, they help each other through rough times (Sarah lost her library book, for instance), and are loved by their parents and all their relatives.

My daughter, when she was seven (she's eight now) loved this entire series - All of a Kind Family, More All of a Kind Family, All of a Kind Family Uptown, All of a Kind Family Downtown, Ella of All of a Kind Family.  She keeps on asking if there are any more to read.  Not bad for a series of books where the protagonists never heard of television, and where all the girls shared a bedroom.  The only problem is, this is the only book of the series still in print!

Madeline

by Ludwig Bemelmans

Madeline is not afraid of mice, and to the tiger in the zoo, Madeline only says 'pooh, pooh!'  She is the smallest of the girls in the old house in Paris that is covered in vines, and the only one who knows so well how to frighten Miss Clavel.  And she has a good many adventures.  Technically ages 4 - 8, in practice, Everyone Loves Madeline!
