Golden Words

In the same way, you wives should yield to your husbands. Then, if some husbands do not obey God's teaching, they will be persuaded to believe without anyone's saying a word to them. They will be persuaded by by the way their wives live. YOur husbands will see the pure lives you live with yuour respect for God.

In the same way, you husbands should live with your wives in an understanding way, since they are weaker than you. But show them respect, because God gives them the same blessing he gives you – the grace that gives true life. Do this so that nothing will stop your prayers.

1 Peter 3:1-2,7 (NIV)

When we honor particular people we're saying in effect that who they are and what they say carries great weight with us. They're extremely valuable in our eyes. Just the opposite is true when we dishonor them. In effect, by our verbal and nonverbal statements we're saying that their words or actions make them of little value or "light-weights" in our eyes.

"[The wicked] says to himself,`God has forgotten; He covers His face and never sees'" (Psalm 10:11). The wicked think that because God lets them live then He must wink at their offenses. Justice may be blind on earth but heaven sees every move and God will recompense. It's yet another of His blessed wills.

He is the Vindicator of causeless causes: of those who have been wronged for no reason. Innocents have been slaughtered for centuries in wars and slanders and circumstances that have turned against them. The Innocent One encountered Evil in its raw form, but He conquered, and He conquers for us.

Excerpts from today's Spurgeon's Devotions

Spurgeon's Morning for July 6

Spurgeon's Evening for July 6

"Whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil."

- Proverbs 1:33

"How many are mine iniquities and sins?"

- Job 13:23

Divine love is rendered conspicuous when it I shines in the midst of judgments. Fair is that lone star which smiles through the rifts of the thunder clouds; bright is the oasis which blooms in the wilderness of sand; so fair and so bright is love in the midst of wrath.

No human mind can adequately estimate the infinite value of the divine sacrifice, for great as is the sin of God's people, the atonement which takes it away is immeasurably greater.

Are You Listening?

by Pat Nordman

"Speak, for your servant is listening"

1 Samuel 3:10

"I will listen to what God the Lord will say: he promises peace to his people, his saints"

Psalm 85:8

"Two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving"

Psalm 62:11,12

T
here is a philosophical question that if a tree falls and no one is there to hear it, then does it make a sound? The same can be said for our spiritual experiences. God calls us by name but, if we don't listen and respond, then we lose the interest and the principle — and the Principal.

What is so touching in the third chapter of 1 Samuel is that Samuel ran into Eli's room three times, thinking that it was the elderly man who had called him because the voice sounded so human. Sometimes we receive calls and rebukes in the familiar voices of relatives and friends. We would do well to be able to distinguish them as messages from God. God often uses human instruments to bring about Divine results.

"Now get up and go. . .and you will be told what to do" (Acts 9:6). God no longer speaks directly to us as He did to Samuel, but He does speak through the various people and events in our lives. I believe that He gives us new responsibilities each day that give us the chance to serve Him and others. God also speaks to us consistently and insistently in nature, in history, and in the gift of reasoning powers. Best of all, He speaks to us as individuals: "I have called you by name; you are mine" (Isaiah 43:1b).

Yes, Lord, I will listen and I will learn that You are a strong and loving God who wants us to be not just hearers but listeners who learn well what You want for us in our lives. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will pray for the Lord to speak, and they will hear Him.
