September 13

"I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service..." (1 Timothy 1:12 NAS).

We are His anointed and appointed to make His rounds our rounds; His work our work. Paul here is thanking God that he has been called to a life of responsibility and hardship. There aren't too many of us willing to do that.

The Christian life is a challenge to mind and body. It is development, construction, production, creativity, and originality. Imagine, we are partners with God. "...I came that [you] might have life. . .abundantly." John 10:10.

Spurgeon's Evening for September 13

"Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well, the rain also filleth the pools."

- Psalm 84:6

"This man receiveth sinners."

- Luke 15:2

Grace may well be compared to rain for its purity, for its refreshing and vivifying influence, for its coming alone from above, and for the sovereignty with which it is given or withheld.

None are so precious in Jesus’ sight as the sinners for whom he died. When Jesus receives sinners, he has not some out-of-doors reception place, no casual ward where he charitably entertains them as men do passing beggars, but he opens the golden gates of his royal heart...

His Plans

by Pat Nordman

"For I know the plans I have for you. . .plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

(Jeremiah 29:11)

My dear children, even if you still are not aware of My love, I know what My plans are for you: plans--thoughts--of peace and prosperity. You think I am apathetic and cruel. You have Me mixed up with the world. How could I possibly will you evil when My character is goodness--and good will toward all of you."

What a joy and relief it is to know that God Himself has a plan and a future for us. Here God gives us a firm foundation simply because God tells us that it is so. We may have days this year when we won't believe this. After all, we think we are smart enough to handle our own lives--until something unexpected breaks our hearts and the hearts of those we cherish.

Imagine knowing that our gentle God has us in His thoughts constantly. It hurts Him to know that our life is full of commotion and competition. He never meant for it to be that way, for He is not the author of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33).

"You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace" Isaiah 55:12; "Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare" Psalm 40:5; "Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be" Job 8:7.

O Father, forgive our unbelief, our prejudices, and our fragmentations that put blinders on our understanding of your truth and purity and loveliness. They are praiseworthy and excellent! And thank You for Your plans for us!

~ The Practice of Godliness ~

In the movie Karate Kid, young Daniel asks Mister Miagi to teach him karate. Miagi agrees under one condition: Daniel must submit totally to his instruction and never question his methods. Daniel shows up the next day eager to learn. To his chagrin, Mister Miagi has him paint a fence. Miagi demonstrates the precise motion for the job: up and down, up and down. Daniel takes days to finish the job.

Next, Miagi has him scrub the deck using a prescribed stroke. Again the job takes days. Daniel wonders, What does this have to do with karate? but he says nothing. Next, Miagi tells Daniel to wash and wax three weather-beaten cars and again prescribes the motion. Finally, Daniel reaches his limit: "I thought you were going to teach me karate, but all you have done is have me do your unwanted chores!"

Daniel has broken Miagi's one condition, and the old man's face pulses with anger. "I have been teaching you karate! Defend yourself!" Miagi thrusts his arm at Daniel, who instinctively defends himself with an arm motion exactly like that used in one of his chores. Miagi unleashes a vicious kick, and again Daniel averts the blow with a motion used in his chores. After Daniel successfully defends himself from several more blows, Miagi simply walks away, leaving Daniel to discover what the master had known all along: skill comes from repeating the correct but seemingly mundane actions. The same is true of godliness.

— Duke Winser, El Segundo, California. Leadership, Vol. 16, no. 4.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Titus 2:11-14
