Golden Words

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, thet he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

I Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)

"The infinite Jehovah is much more pleased with the gentle melting of a broken heart, and the pious breathings of humble love, than all the noise and clamor in the world." From the journal of Joseph Pilmoor.

"The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools" Ecclesiastes 9:17; "But I have stilled and quieted my soul" (Psalm 131:2a); "In quietness and trust is [our] strength" (Isaiah 30:15b). God wants an untroubled heart in His kingdom. He is the Author of peace, not the noise and disorientation we have today.

September 24

"The lessons I have culled from the crucible of real life, whatever I know about the undoing of nations and the triumph of man, teach me that as long as hope pulsates within us like blood, redemption is possible, like survival itself, for a society, for a people, for an individual, even for a child without parents, without means, without education, without health, even in conditions that stagger the mind." Of Blood and Hope, Samuel Pisar.

Pisar somehow came through the Holocaust and wrote one of the more uplifting and educational books about that terrible age in history. We only think we have suffered; the survivors of the concentration camps did, and still hoped.

Spurgeon's Morning for September 23

Spurgeon's Evening for September 23

"Let Israel rejoice in him."

- Psalm 149:2

"Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe."

- Mark 9:23

Saviour! Rejoice then, believer, in this: thou art accepted "in the beloved." Thou lookest within, and thou sayest, "There is nothing acceptable here!" But look at Christ, and see if there is not everything acceptable there.

Faith standeth in God’s power, and is robed in God’s majesty; it weareth the royal apparel, and rideth on the King’s horse, for it is the grace which the King delighteth to honour.

Spurgeon's Morning for September 24 Spurgeon's Evening for September 24

"For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him."

- Ezra 8:22

"I sleep, but my heart waketh."

- Song of Solomon 5:2

It is a most blessed thing to have no props and no buttresses, but to stand upright on the Rock of Ages, upheld by the Lord alone.

It is to be feared that many believers lose their strength as Samson lost his locks, while sleeping on the lap of carnal security.

Freedom

by Cathy Vinson

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not let yourselves be burdened with the yoke of slavery.

(Gal 5:1)

This is not always easy, especially for the brethren with the weak conscience, those who walk a very narrow path hewn in both sides by guilt and self-criticism. Life must follow predetermined actions. Any fluctuation opens up to the wide playing field of guilt.

We might be those who watch others and try as they to laugh freely, speak freely, eat freely, spend freely, but do so with difficulty.

There is always a yoke of slavery nearby. We may try hard to fit in a church or group by following written and unwritten norms, to be acceptable to a stern God, a demanding leader we idolize, or to just live up to the dictates of a weak conscience.

Another way is to say we are legalistic. As the Pharisee, we tend to meet situations with "Is it lawful...?" We can limit life to a series of decisions between good and evil. Our life is described as "the man who does these things shall live IN them" (Gal 3:12). We search for life in our deeds rather than faith.

What is our hope for the freedom Jesus brought? Our deliverance begins with knowing how much Jesus wants to set us free..."Come unto Me you who labor and are heavy laden..." (Think of how Galatians and Romans 7-8 were written with us in mind.) We already know we cannot stack up. The schoolmaster of the law has done his job well; we are ripened; we are ready for the sweet deliverance from ourselves through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom 7:24).

"It is GOOD for our heart to be strengthened by grace..." (Heb 13:9). We need a change of diet. We need to be fed and strengthed by grace rather than our works. Grace will teach us about the One who loves us not according to what we deserve.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free..." Freedom was a worthy goal in which to set our feet. It provides a roomy stance. Stand in it and stay in it as we "do not let ourselves be burdened" again.

~ The Value of One ~

It was early morning. On the beach was an elderly man. He walked with a cane, carefully surveying the beach that the receding tide had left exposed. Every now and then he bent to pick something up and toss it into the ocean. I watch with fascination as he carefully scanned the beach before him. It was then that I realized he was looking for starfish. Every time he saw one lying helpless in the sand, unable to get back to the ocean on his own, he would lovingly pick it up and toss it gently back into the sea. Curious as to why he was doing this, I approached him. He told me, "The starfish are left behind after the tide goes out. If they don't get back into the ocean they will dry up and die beneath the hot summer sun."

"But there are endless miles of beach and there must be millions of starfish," I said. "Surely you don't think you can save them all. What difference can your efforts possibly make?" Slowly the old man bent over and picked up another starfish. As he tossed it into ocean he looked at me and said, "It makes a difference to that one."
I was deeply touched by this story. How easy it is to become so discouraged by the sheer magnitude of the task that Christ has set before us that we fail to focus on the value to Him of each one. We are called to be faithful in scanning those "beaches" and in making a difference to "that one" and "that one" and "that one" in the name of Christ.
