Golden Words

I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5 (NIV)

Fruit is the manifestation of the essential nature of the tree, and our human lives are meant to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit, which is, literally, the life of God in me, invading me, producing fruit for His glory.

— Oswald Chambers

October 4

The newspaper told the tragic story of the murdered teen. Four weeks passed and still no one came forward to identify the body of the girl, so she will be buried in an unmarked grave.

We weep at stories like this. Surely some-where there is a family who loved this pre-cious life. Who has murdered her? Who is not missing her? "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be.-..without self-co-trol, brutal..." (2 Timothy 3:2,3). There is an empty chair in some family's home. Every parent's heart cries to God for the salvation of this child so ruthlessly murdered.

Spurgeon's Evening for October 4

"At evening time it shall be light."

- Zechariah 14:7

"If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."

- 1 John 2:1

Oftentimes we look forward with forebodings to the time of old age, forgetful that at eventide it shall be light. To many saints, old age is the choicest season in their lives. A balmier air fans the mariner’s cheek as he nears the shore of immortality, fewer waves ruffle his sea, quiet reigns, deep, still and solemn.

All the sin that a believer ever did, or can be allowed to commit, cannot destroy his interest in the Lord Jesus Christ, as his advocate. The name here given to our Lord is suggestive. "Jesus." Ah! then he is an advocate such as we need, for Jesus is the name of one whose business and delight it is to save.

A Return to the Birthplace

by Cathy Vinson

This one was born in Zion...this one and that one were born in her.

(Psalms 87:4,5,6)

"This one was born in Zion...this one and that one were born in her" (Ps87:4,5,6). Sounds like God and His Universe having a conversation. Also sounds like a random choosing, but not this birthplace. "For He choose us in Him before the creation of the world...and raised us up with Christ...in the heavenly realms" (Eph 1:4,2:6).

Were you born in Zion? County / state matter little to this birthplace. If you were born into Jesus, you were born there. Being born anew, you were born there. You now have a homeland you are retruning to.

Those born in Zion find all their springs are in her; their fountains and springs are fed there. As they make music the musicians sing, "All my fountains are in you" (Ps 87:7). No wonder we would cleave to this city.

We are near, we are not aliens (Eph 2:13,19). We are members of God's very household (Eph 2:19). We "have come" to Mt Zion, the city of the loving God (Heb 12:22). How lovely is our birthplace. How lovely is our homeland. "On and on to the homeland."

"Even the sparrow has found a home...a place near Your altar" (Ps 84:3). Aren't we worth more than the sparrow and swallow who find for themselves and their young a furnishing in God's dwelling?

Let us set our hearts towards Mt Zion.

"Blessed are those...who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. They go from strength to strength 'til each appears before God in Zion." (Ps 84:4,7)

~ Rage ~

The dictionary defines rage as insanity or raving fury. We often use it to describe natural phenomena. Interestingly, the words rage and rabies come from the same Latin root word meaning madness or raving. The effect of rabies is the same in animals and humans. As the central nervous system is destroyed, the victim falls into raving insanity.

Rage is not a delicate word, especially when it is applied to people as it is in our English versions in the first line of Psalm 2. Why do the nations rage? Why is the planet Earth in the grip of raving insanity? Why is the human race rabid? According to the second Psalm, the raging sinfulness of mankind is not only violent and grotesque, but also ridiculous. The raving and plotting of sinners is comical, in a dark way, because there is a righteous God in heaven who extends his rule over the earth.

- Michael J. Hostetler, Illustrating the Sermon, (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House, 1989) 37

Patience is better than strength.
Controlling your temper is better than capturing a city.

Proverbs 16:32 (NCV)
