Golden Words

You neglected the Rock who had fathered you; you forgot the God who had given you birth.

Deut. 32:18 New Living Translation

God has given us life. It is by His hand that we receive our daily sustenance. Why would we choose to live our life without the God who has given us life? Even as Christians, we often choose to live our life without God. We ignore Christ, the Rock. We make decisions and live our life as though God does not exist. Might we, as Christians, give God his rightful place in our lives.

Delight is keener, suffering is richer, thought is more exciting, love and friendship are deeper, steadier in the long perspective of God.

"Walk, do not run, to the nearest exit." Walk! Don't rush for, if you do, you may slip. "He gives strength to the weary, and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint" (Isaiah 40:29-31). The progression is fascinating: wings for early youth; runn-ing for the young and vigor-ous; and finally walking for the ma-ture who have settled into life and need patience, endurance and hope.

"I will meditate in thy precepts."

- Psalm 119:15

"The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost."

- John 14:26

There are times when solitude is better than society, and silence is wiser than speech. We should be better Christians if we were more alone, waiting upon God, and gathering through meditation on his Word spiritual strength for labour in his service.

The Holy Spirit consoles, but Christ is the consolation. If we may use the figure, the Holy Spirit is the Physician, but Jesus is the medicine. He heals the wound, but it is by applying the holy ointment of Christ’s name and grace.

Poor Man

by Cathy Vinson

This poor man called....

(Psalm 34:6)

Nothing seems as sweet to the soul as answered prayer, and prayer answered specifically from the cry of our own lips! We stop like the healed leper who returned and acknowledge the very hand of God has reached towards our plea. "Me, even me, God has leaned towards."

Many may feel confident about the prayers of others and will lean on those as the only prayers that can "get through" in time of crisis. Though needed, each of us benefits to have before God this testimony: "His ears are attentive to my cry, the very voice of my cry."

In this beautiful 34th Psalm, David is praising God with his whole heart. He is jubilant over the deliverance he has received in response to his cry. He exclaims, "THIS poor man called, and the Lord heard him; He saved him out of all his troubles" (Ps 34:6).

What a treasured confidence to draw us closer to our Father: "Poor and wretched and helpless as I am, my God has heard my cry and responded to me and delivered me." To stand against the many troubles (vs 19) of our day, we need to know of our Lord's openness to OUR call for help.

"Then my enemies will turn back
when I call for help;
By this I will know that God is FOR me." (Psalm 56:9)

~ The Ass and the Lapdog ~

A MAN had an Ass, and a Maltese Lapdog, a very great beauty. The Ass was left in a stable and had plenty of oats and hay to eat, just as any other Ass would. The Lapdog knew many tricks and was a great favorite with his master, who often fondled him and seldom went out to dine without bringing him home some tidbit to eat. The Ass, on the contrary, had much work to do in grinding the corn-mill and in carrying wood from the forest or burdens from the farm. He often lamented his own hard fate and contrasted it with the luxury and idleness of the Lapdog, till at last one day he broke his cords and halter, and galloped into his master's house, kicking up his heels without measure, and frisking and fawning as well as he could. He next tried to jump about his master as he had seen the Lapdog do, but he broke the table and smashed all the dishes upon it to atoms. He then attempted to lick his master, and jumped upon his back. The servants, hearing the strange hubbub and perceiving the danger of their master, quickly relieved him, and drove out the Ass to his stable with kicks and clubs and cuffs. The Ass, as he returned to his stall beaten nearly to death, thus lamented: "I have brought it all on myself! Why could I not have been contented to labor with my companions, and not wish to be idle all the day like that useless little Lapdog!"

Some Christians complain that sinners go unpunished by God while good people suffer. Well, we must not concern ourselves with God's Justice since in the end, both the righteous and sinners will get exactly what they deserve: one eternal rewards and the other eternal punishment!
