Golden Words

How great is God -- beyond our understanding!
The number of his years is past finding out.
Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
God's voice thunders in marvelous ways;
he does great things beyond our understanding.

Job 36:26, 37:2, 5 NIV

We can not speak for God. We cannot put words in His mouth. His power is awesome. His presence is awesome. God is in control - when He speaks we should listen. Be listening for his voice. Perhaps it will thunder in our hearts.

The highest knowledge that we can have of God in this life is to know that He is above all we can think concerning Him.

November 13

"I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted" (Job 42:2). This is the substance of Dr. Weather-head's book. No purpose of God's can be thwarted by man's wrong choices. God can use evil to bring forth good. Man always has the choice: "O Jerusalem ...how often I have longed to gather your children together...but you were not willing" (Matthew 23:37). My children, you could have done My good will, but you wouldn't, so you have made your own house desolate. How I weep when you blame Me for your own rebellious attitudes. Believe Me, I do know better than you.

"The branch cannot bear fruit of itself."

- John 15:4

"Men ought always to pray."

- Luke 18:1

It is at home that we feel safe: we shut the world out and dwell in quiet security. So when we are with our God we "fear no evil." He is our shelter and retreat, our abiding refuge.

When our Lord was on earth, what was the treatment he received? Were his claims acknowledged, his instructions followed, his perfections worshipped, by those whom he came to bless? No; "He was despised and rejected of men."

Current Bible Question

What young man loved a girl so much that he burst into tears after their first kiss?

Previous question and Answer:

What can happen when parents eat sour grapes?

Ezekiel 18:2

"Why do you quote this proverb in the land of Israel: 'The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children's mouths pucker at the taste'?

A prominent society man asked a bishop whether it was according to the rules of etiquette to say grace at a banquet table. The clergyman replied: "I do not know much about etiquette, but I remember seeing on the wall of a farmer's house a picture showing mules and oxen at a crib. These were devouring the fodder and scattering some beneath their feet, and over the picture was this inscription:

Who without prayer sits down to eat,
And without thanks then leaves the table,
Tramples the gift of God with feet,
And is like the mule and ox in the stable.

Fragments

by Pat Nordman

"Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted"

John 6:12b

God is particular about our fragments, our bits and pieces and what we do with them: fragments of time and opportunity, thoughts and actions. Jesus asked His disciples to gather the broken pieces that represent what is left over from His bounty. When God feeds us, He feasts us! He is able to do exceeding abundantly above that which we ask, even. But He does not want us to waste the fragments from His abundance.

Gathering fragments does not mean to stockpile. When the Israelites were in the desert, they were told not to gather manna on the seventh day (Exodus 16:26). They were to trust in their God that He would furnish their needs for that day, also; that there was no need to hoard provisions when God had promised to provide their daily bread.

With God little things assume great importance. He gives us all things to enjoy, but He also is concerned about the cup of cold water that we give in His name; He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, but He takes notice when a sparrow falls. We think nothing of killing time, that precious substance that makes up life, only to wish it back when the seconds, minutes, hours, weeks, months and years have suddenly gone and we are old and sorry for the wasted times and words.

But the saddest waste of all is the wasted life which is epidemic today. God surely weeps as He watches humankind destroy itself with drugs and pornography and violence. Some of the most grievous words in God's Word are, ". . .The younger son. . .squandered his wealth in wild living" Luke 15:13. The parent who has buried a child wasted from riotous living knows well how the little things make or break us. "Let nothing be wasted," especially one for whom our beloved Jesus died!
