Why vegetarian?
just a few of the infinite reasons
- obviously, to avoid the unnatural suffering of other animals
- 50% of ALL land in North America is used entirely for the inhumane raising of beef cattle
- 70% of public land in the west is used for cattle ranching
- the U.S. has lost 2/3's of its topsoil. the major factor in this loss is overgrazing (reponsible for 85% of the total topsoil loss)
- 16 lbs. of wheat are needed to produce 1 lb. of beef. 1 lb. of wheat is neede to make 1 lb. of bread.
- 20,000 potatoes can be grown on one acre of land, as opposed to 165 lbs. of beef which can be produced on the same plot of land
- livestock eat 80% of all corn and 955 of all grain grown in the U.S. 60 million people will starve to death this year. if Americans cut meat intake by 10%, 60 million people could be fed with the grain saved alone
- 20 vegetarians could live off the same area of land needed to feed one person eating meat
- a vegetarian humanity could be 10 times our current population without the problems of starvation and overpopulation
- over 50% of tropical rainforest destruction is linked to cattle ranching. every 1/4 lb. hamburger made from these animals is responsible for the destruction of 55 square feet of rainforest
- at the current rate, the rainforests will be gone by 2010, and with it, 500,000 species inhabiting it
- deforestation caused by cattle ranching and methane gas created (as the by-product of metabolictic activity) by the unnaturally high population of cattle are leading causes of the greenhouse effect and other environmental threats
- more than 50% percent of males in the U.S. die of heart attacks and other related diseases each year. this ain't from eating lettuce, folks
"Nothing can increase the chances of human survival on this planet as much as the switch to a vegetarian diet"
