Letter from the Author:

Dear Readers,

How lovely to have a space in which to say anything I want!  Actually there is much to say, much that is new in my life and career.

For one thing I am fairly new on-line and am still wondering how I ever did without the delight of all this instant contact with other writers and readers—not to mention access to all the information that is out there. I have a friend constructing a web site for me. We hope to have it up and running by May 1, in plenty of time to promote my next book, my debut title with Dell. More of that later. You will find my site, once it is ready, at www.marybalogh.com. Do come and visit!

Writing can often be a lone job (not lonely, but solitary), so I always look forward to writers' conferences much as many people must look forward to spending winter months in Florida or Hawaii. Bliss to me is the chance to spend a few days talking and listening non-stop to readers, writers, booksellers, editors, agents, etc. I will be at the huge Romantic Times convention in Toronto in September and it should be especially exciting as I have been asked to present a "Master Class" the day before the conference officially begins. From 9 a.m. until about midnight participants are invited to join me in a day of total immersion in the Regency world of Mary Balogh—with re-enactments (I already have costume people, actors and cover models lined up), readings, preview glimpses into my work in progress, discussions, some teaching on writing skills particularly associated with me (emotional intensity, in-depth character development, for example), questions, Regency meals, just plain chatting, and doubtless other attractions that will occur to me once I get down to the nitty-gritty of planning the day.

One Night For Love But the most exciting event for me this year will be the release of my debut book with Dell, ONE NIGHT FOR LOVE, a Regency era historical. I have signed an exclusive contract with Dell, and they have certainly done a great job of starting me off with a magnificent cover. The stepback cover has the hero and heroine bathing naked in a pool at the foot of a waterfall at night and indulging in a romantic moment. Hot stuff! But beautiful too.

The book begins with a scene I have always wanted to write—a grand wedding that is interrupted at the crucial moment by the sudden arrival of a former spouse, in this case a wife, whom the bridegroom had watched die a few years before the start of the book, one day after he married her in Portugal during the Peninsular Wars (hence the title, ONE NIGHT FOR LOVE). Except, of course, that she did not die.

ONE NIGHT FOR LOVE is a type of Cinderella story since the heroine is the illiterate daughter of an infantry sergeant while the hero is the Earl of Kilbourne. But it picks up where Cinderella leaves off. How could two such very different people, no matter how much they may love each other, possibly live happily together? It is a very intense and passionate romance. Make sure you have a full box of tissues at hand when you start it! But never fear—it IS a romance, and so of course there is a resolution to all the difficulties. Neville and Lily end up living happily ever after.

I am fortunate enough to have an editor at Dell who recognizes that I am at my best and most intensely passionate when I am writing in the Regency era. And so Regency-era historicals are what you can expect of me at least for the foreseeable future. At the moment I am working on one with a dark, bad, dangerous hero, who meets his match when a woman who appears to be an ordinary working girl interrupts a duel in which he is involved and inadvertently causes him to be shot in the leg. He is not amused and tells her so in no uncertain terms. But then neither is she and astonishes him by roundly scolding him. And so the battle of wills (and the romance, of course) begins....

If you have continued reading to this point, thank you!  I hope I have pleased some of you in the past and will continue to do so in the future. If I am a writer you have never tried, I hope you will pick up the July book just out of curiosity, to see if I can lure you into going hunting for my backlist!  Let me hear from you.

Sincerely,
Mary Balogh
