Letter from the Author:Hi Everyone,
I'm honored to be among the respected authors June has featured as author of the month. I feel as if this web site is my home away from home. Each time I go on the internet, I have to stop at Bookbug's message board to get all the latest news, find out how everyone is doing and what's new in their lives and, of course, find out what everyone is currently reading!
I love to write fiction as much as I love to read, and I'm tempted to make up all kinds of wonderful tales. My childhood was filled with goblins and heroes, and my own children will tell you their world is exactly the same way. When we go for walks in the forest together, it is filled with dragons and winged creatures and moving sand pits!
I began writing about Carpathians several years ago. I wrote the books, as I do all of them, because the stories are inside me and they demand to be written. Also, I wanted an answer to the question, "Where did the first vampire come from?" If it was a decision to give up one's soul, what would be awful enough to cause someone to make such a terrible choice? See, I think about things like this all the time. Scary, isn't it? Naturally, I'm a hopeless romantic so it all fits together rather nicely for me. Weaving together part truth, part legend, and myth with fiction always makes for a truly intriguing read.
It's fun writing about power, extraordinary gifts all of us at one time or another might have wished for, or could have used. Shape-shifting is so intriguing; and to walk unseen! Now I could use that particular talent! These books offer an opportunity to soar like an eagle through the sky or run with a wolf pack. It's very important to me to give my readers something new and different each time I write a story.
I love the Carpathian people. They are fiercely loyal and protective, and their ceremonies are beautiful. It touches me the way they offer up their lives for one another; but it saddens me the way the males must live—so alone, yet their code of honor demands they hang on under such impossible circumstances. They all have failings and strengths, and sometimes the things they consider failings turn out to be their strengths. I love the humanity of that.
Each book I've written is a love story about two people of strong character who are made for one another. It is their story and they go where they will; I merely record it as it unfolds. Sometimes I want to take them in a different direction altogether, intruding on their lives; but it never works—they refuse to cooperate. They know who they are and destiny has brought them together for their own adventures.
DARK PRINCE is the story of the leader of the Carpathians. He has many problems to face in attempting to save his dying race from extinction. The woman who is strong enough to stand beside him has great courage and compassion. I must admit, these two characters moved me greatly from laughter to tears on more than one occasion.DARK DESIRE, which will be out in December, examines a woman's courage in the face of madness. I particularly loved Shea, the heroine. She faces so many challenges and has to make unfamiliar decisions that are uncomfortable for her. Shea is an extraordinary woman, and the man who loves her knows in his heart and soul he has a treasure. Without her, he has no chance to survive.
DARK GOLD, available next spring, is a story about a young woman who loves her young brother and has planned her life around caring for him. The hero who comes to their aid finds himself in the position of having a human rival for his life mate's affections. Following DARK GOLD, two more books are slated for the year 2000: DARK MAGIC and DARK CHALLENGE.
My books are very different from many kinds of romances, but nevertheless, they are love stories. The couples have to learn to live together under unique circumstances and they each have obstacles they must overcome, but I did my best to keep their reactions in character. In DARK PRINCE, Raven, the heroine, follows a group of assassins into the mountains despite the danger to herself. She knows they are making an attempt to kill someone, yet it is in her nature to try to come to the aid of helpless victims. She couldn't act any other way.
Each of us is different. Even within my own family, all of us have different reactions to individual situations. So I have tried to stay true to my character's natures. Yet they all have a sense of humor because I believe it's rather difficult to get through life (or live with a very strong partner) without humor!
I can't pick one particular story over another and say, "I love that one the best!" It isn't like that. You love them all, maybe differently, but as a writer you love each one. It is my hope that anyone willing to try something new finds my books enjoyable...at the very least. Hopefully, readers will love them the way I do! The one thing I know for certain is we share a common love of words and books.
All the best always,
Christine Feehan
