Dixie Browning - Sherri Browning

Browning, Dixie - ALEX AND THE ANGEL (3+)
When Angel was a young teenager, she had a huge crush on her brother's best friend, Alex Hightower. He was older than she and amused by her actions. Fond of her, he never took her seriously and, in time, they went separate ways—both marrying other people—he, having a child. Now they meet again. Angel is a widow and running a landscaping business. She's cute, perky and always dressed outlandishly. Alex, long divorced, is a highly respected businessman, going steady with a sophisticated socialite and leading a life that is now boring to him. He knows he's in a rut, but is unable to figure out what to do about it. Alex's precocious teen-age daughter and Angel become good friends. Appalled by his sexual attraction to Angel, Alex tries to ignore what he feels, as does she. ALEX AND THE ANGEL is a delightful romp between the sexes. Fun reading. ~Review provided by Romance Reviews

Browning, Sherri - SCOUNDREL'S VOW, THE  (Dell - 8/99) (3+)
Setting: Regency England
After six years at Lady Shelbourne's school for girls, Calandra Locke is returning to Scarborough Park full of romantic dreams and hopes. She was sent off to school when relatives became suspicious of her growing relationship with former childhood playmate, Sir Scarborough Weston; and now that Callie is all grown up and no longer pudgy, she envisions Scar falling all over himself to win her affections.

As Callie steps from the carriage, she notices that Scar has also changed a great deal: he is more handsome and muscular than before, as well as confident and authoritative. Her dreams of a happy reunion are dashed, however, when he calls her by a belittling nickname and taunts her about eating the cook's sweets, then proceeds to flirt with a coquettish maid in Callie's presence. On top of that, his Aunt Lenore invites an eligible young lady to visit in hopes of snagging a wife for her nephew. Callie is crushed, but she is not going to give up her dreams.

Scar is not as immune to Callie as it may seem. He definitely wants her, but he considers himself a rake and doesn't want to ruin her chances for a good marriage. Also, she is the daughter of his steward, Eldridge, who means the world to him. The best solution to the problem is to find a husband for Callie, but that idea doesn't make him any happier!  Despite his Aunt Lenore's plans, Scar does not intend to marry; so in order to stop her matchmaking, he makes a deal with her that will change everyone's life.

I enjoyed THE SCOUNDREL'S VOW because it dwells on the relationship between the hero and heroine. All of the characters are well developed, but my favorite is Callie. She is one determined young lady who will allow nothing to stand in the way of getting what she wants: Scar's love. She seems to be the only one who is pleased with her grand plan, however; others, including her father and Scar's aunt, do their best to thwart her. In trying to be noble, Scar makes a scoundrel's vow, but he finds it difficult to fulfill. New author Sherri Browning has written a fast-paced Regency romance that will appeal to many readers. I'm looking forward to future books by this fresh new voice in romance fiction. ~Sharon Laird for Bookbug on the Web
