Page Contents: Deb Crockett - Tanya Anne Crosby
Crockett, Deb - NATCHEZ (Domhan Books - 1998) (5) Ms. Crockett's debut novel NATCHEZ establishes her ability to spin a captivating tale. With historical accuracy and vivid character detail she transports you to the squalor of "Natchez-Under-The-Hill." Cutthroats lurk in alleyways, pickpockets swarm the muddy streets like locusts. Smoke-shrouded saloons vibrate with the loud, gaudy laughter of prostitutes plying their ancient trade in the shadow of nimble-fingered gamblers. Murderers find sanctuary in this lawless community tucked beneath the hill, and pimps squabble among themselves for prime territory. The stench of the waterfront hangs heavy in the air but doesn't mask the rancid odors of unwashed bodies, or the unmistakable scent of sexual musk. In this arena of corrupt humanity, genteel and sheltered Rebecca Bennett must find a way to not only survive but to succeed on her own; while she deals with the death, and possible murder, of her father, the total loss of her financial funds, and the apparent betrayal of the man she loves. Rebecca and Oliver are a warm, sensual couple who struggle to overcome the obstacles in the path to their love and happiness. With incomparable skill, Ms. Crockett delivers a fast-paced, character-rich love story in her own strong, refreshing voice. Add NATCHEZ to your "must read" list. ~Priscilla M. Crosby, Tanya Anne - ON BENDED KNEE (Avon - 1/99) (4) Seana, crippled at birth, grew up outside village society because of her handicap and her father's reputation as a drunk. She literally lives in a cave until her father, whom she loves dearly...despite his faults, falls ill and she decides to marry in order to give him a home. Our heroine sets out to woo her childhood friend, Broc, who has grown into a handsome, if slightly dense, young man. But how will she get him to propose when she has no experience in these matters? Enter Colin Mac Brodie, Broc's best friend, who is fair and favored and loved by all, especially women. Only Seana, who felt the bite of Colin's scorn as a child, has remained immune to him. Now she needs his help in order to learn how to attract Broc. What ensues is a story of great charm. Colin finally encounters a female who doesn't fall at his feet. He discovers a courageous and desirable woman, and he begins to want Seana for himself. Eventually she brings out the good, honorable man who lies beneath Colin's rakish image, and she begins to realize that Broc may not be the man she wants after all. There is also a secondary story involving characters from the first two novels in the series, LYON'S GIFT and MACKINNON'S BRIDE, which you may want to read before this book. Otherwise, some of the references to previous situations could be a bit confusing. Seana and Colin's story is thoroughly satisfying though, and if you like a romance where the arrogant hero is brought to his knees by a strong, lively heroine, ON BENDED KNEE will provide you with much enjoyment. ~Anne Kirby for Bookbug on the Web
