Fobes, Tracy - HEART OF THE DOVE  (Sonnet - 8/99) (4)
Setting: 1856
Lucinda Drakewyck, the last of the Drakewyck witches, has been quietly practicing her craft despite her uncle's disapproval. Recently she has been having visions, wherein the man she will someday fall in love with is also the man who will cause both their deaths. Worried, Lucinda confronts her uncle and learns of a curse placed on the Drakewyck and Clairmont families in 1593. He gives his niece a statue of a crystal dove with a ruby heart, believed to be magical. Later that evening, Lucinda meets the man in her visions, Richard Clairmont. After serving in the Crimean War, Richard is bitter, disillusioned, and angry, yet he is instantly drawn to the bewitching woman.

Laced with fantasy, HEART OF THE DOVE is an enthralling story of a woman who is determined not to fulfill the vision she has had, despite her feelings for Richard and the strong forces that draw them together. The hero and heroine are so real and compelling that you will read long into the night to finish this tale of forbidden love. I was unable to put the book down, and I would highly recommend HEART OF THE DOVE to anyone who enjoys a beautiful love story with a magical ambiance. Tracy Fobes is definitely an author to watch. ~Pat Cavender for Bookbug on the Web

Fobes, Tracy - TOUCH NOT THE CAT  (Pocket - 1998) (4+)
In 1427 Scotland, during peace talks meant to put an end to the fighting between the McQuade and MacClelland clans, a betrayal leads a witch to put a terrible curse on the MacClellands—a curse that will follow them through the ages until the two clans become one.

When we first meet Nicholas, the Duke of Efington, the year is 1817. He is a highly sensual man who once steeped himself in the pleasures of the flesh, but he has decided it is time to marry and beget an heir. While attending a ball, Scottish beauty Catherine MacClelland captures his attention. She is attracted to Nicholas, but fends off his advances because she carries the MacClellan "curse of the Grimalkin". Nicholas arrogantly continues to pursue her, however; eventually leading him to the discovery that he may be the key to the removal of the family curse.

As the tale further unfolds, we meet a host of secondary characters who have a few secrets of their own. TOUCH NOT THE CAT beckons the reader's interest with startling transformations and unusual twists and turns. The author combines romance and fantasy, delivering a poignant, captivating story that ultimately leads to a very satisfying conclusion. ~Robin Peek for Bookbug on the Web
