Gibson, Rachel - SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE (Avon - 1998) (5) This has to be one of the most delightful books I've read in a long time. There are several laugh-out-loud scenes, and I still can't stop smiling when I think of it. SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE is Rachel Gibson's first book and what an impressive debut! She reminds me of Susan Elizabeth Phillips (only better)! The book opens in Seattle, seven years in the past. Georgeanne Howard is about to marry Virgil, the elderly owner of the Seattle hockey team. Realizing she's about to make a BIG mistake, she jilts him at the altar and jumps into the car of one of Virgil's hockey players, John "The Wall" Kowalsky. They spend the weekend at his beach house before John drops her off at the airport with a ticket for Dallas. However, there's really nothing back in Dallas for Georgie and she ends up working at a catering service. Jump forward seven years. Georgie is now a successful caterer with a six-year-old daughter, Lexie, who is an absolute delight. She has been very careful not to cater any sporting events or go any place where she might run into John. This works well until she caters a charity event that John attends. He confronts her, she panics and drops her purse, grabs most of her items, but leaves in a rush—forgetting her checkbook, which John spots on the floor. When he delivers it to her home the next day, Georgie is in the shower and her daughter answers the door—a little girl who bears an amazing resemblance to John. I highly recommend this book! ~Maudeen W. (maudeenw@aol.com)

Gibson, Rachel - TRULY MADLY YOURS (Avon - 1/99) (4+) Nick grew up in the small Idaho town knowing he could never be a part of his father's family—Henry wouldn't even acknowledge him as his son; but a small part of him had always longed for the love and acceptance that seemed to come so easily to Delaney. From the first time he'd seen her, shyly hanging on to his father's hand, Nick had found it impossible to ignore the love-hate feelings that always welled up inside him when she was around. Delaney had always been drawn to the darkly handsome boy, as well, but he confused her. He was just as apt to blacken her eyes with a snowball as walk her safely home when her bicycle tires were slashed; and, as a child, she never knew whether his actions would hurt...or help her in some way. With Henry's death, and the strange stipulations in his will, Henry seemed to be reaching out from his grave to once again manipulate their lives—and no one could foresee what the ultimate result of that would be. TRULY MADLY YOURS is an intensely sensual book with some gritty, down-to-earth dialogue that kept me reading, almost nonstop, for one whole afternoon. The author ran a risk when she made Nick's character seem so arrogantly promiscuous at the outset, but she fleshed him out with just enough vulnerability that I came to understand where his "attitude" (and ultimately, Delaney's forgiveness) came from. In addition to the hero and heroine, Ms. Gibson peopled her book with characters and locales that were quirky and believable for small-town America, and all those things added up to create a very compelling story. If you aren't put off by the occasional four-letter word, and you like your books on the steamy side, don't overlook this wonderful contemporary romance from a very talented author. TRULY MADLY YOURS is not to be missed! ~Connie Ramsdell for Bookbug on the Web
