Kauffman, Donna - LEGEND MACKINNON, THE (Bantam - 4/99) (4+) When Maggie Claren's ex-fiancé becomes violent, she seeks refuge in the North Carolina cabin left to her by her Great Uncle Lachlan. There she meets Duncan MacKinnon, a ghost who resides in Purgatory eleven months out of the year. They fall in love...even though Duncan cannot stay in Maggie's world. A cousin gifted with the "second sight," Cailean, arrives at the cabin, and the two Clarens read the journals that Maggie inherited from her uncle. They discover the existence of a curse, which originated in the 1700s and dooms any union between the Clarens and MacKinnons to a tragic end. The journals also mention a "Claren Key" that will cancel the curse. Cailean travels to the Isle of Skye in Scotland to search for the key, and Maggie and Duncan promise to join her shortly. Cailean meets Duncan's brother, Rory, who is an immortal. At first he's unwilling to aid in the search; but he later decides to help...as the couple falls in love. When Maggie and Duncan arrive, there is a joyful reunion between the two brothers who haven't seen one another in over two-hundred years. Delaney, the third Claren cousin, soon joins them in Scotland. She inherited the MacKinnon family home, Stonelachen, but intends to sell the castle because she can't afford the upkeep. Agreeing to help the others search the castle for the mysterious key, Delaney is surprised...and stunned to meet the last MacKinnon brother, Alexander, in the dungeon. Alexander, who traveled through time to the present, is on a mission to transport weapons back to the 1700s to aid in the defeat of the Clarens! Donna Kauffman really puts her storytelling skills to the test in THE LEGEND MACKINNON. This magical, multilayered romance merges the past with the present as three cursed Scottish warriors, caught between worlds, find love with the last descendants of the enemy clan. THE LEGEND MACKINNON is a highly complex, compelling tale that will keep you spellbound until the very last word. When I discovered what the "key" was, I was in tears, and the story so fully involved my emotions that I didn't want to say good-bye to the lovers. Thank you for a great book, Ms. Kauffman! ~Pat Cavender for Bookbug on the Web
