Lee, Rachel - BEFORE I SLEEP  (Warner - 7/99) (4)
What if, as an idealistic new prosecuting attorney who is on a team trying a case of capital punishment, this is your first case and you help convict a man of murdering his foster parents by using circumstantial evidence. What if, five years later, you are disillusioned enough to leave the legal arena and you are convinced this same man is innocent—and he is about to be executed in three weeks. What would you do?

This is the position in which Carey Stover finds herself. Now working as a radio talk show host, fielding the public's questions and opinions about law, she is desperate to save the innocent man's life. Carey turns to her former lover, Seamus Rourke, who was the investigating police officer; but he insists the Otis case was tried, and as far as he's concerned it's over. Then two people who were involved in the case are found dead—in the exact way the condemned man's foster parents were killed. Suddenly, Carey and Seamus find themselves in a race against time to investigate the murders and attempt to save John Otis from Florida's electric chair.

BEFORE I SLEEP is not a book you want to begin reading late at night unless you plan to go without sleep!  It immediately grabs your attention and pulls you into the story. Caught in a web of suspense and emotion, the hero and heroine must battle time and their personal fears. Both have been hurt in the past and they are afraid to trust in love the second time around. BEFORE I SLEEP is a nail-biting, engaging story about redemption and second chances, for those readers who crave well-written romantic suspense. I found it very satisfying and enjoyable. ~Pat Cavender for Bookbug on the Web

Leigh, Ana - THE MACKENZIES: JAKE  (Avon - 8/99) (4)
Setting: Texas and Colorado, 1880
Beth MacKenzie is a vibrant young woman who has no interest in marriage; not after Michael "Jake" Carrington stole her heart years ago and made her look like a fool. Now he is about to steal something else: her dream of building a railroad link between Denver and Dallas. The only way to save her dream is to marry Jake, "the most despicable person she has ever known;" but achieving her goal is worth any sacrifice. Or is it?

Jake has finally succeeded in his quest for revenge on his father's behalf: to ruin the MacKenzies. He has renewed his relationship with the lovely Beth, and he knows she will do anything to keep her dream alive, even marry him. So why doesn't he feel any sense of satisfaction? Regretfully, he used Beth and broke her heart years ago, but he's determined that their marriage will be more than just a business arrangement. All he has to do is convince Beth of his intentions...and his love for her. She's not an easy one to convince, however!

Ana Leigh continues the MacKenzie saga with another wonderful, sensual western romance. THE MACKENZIES: JAKE is highlighted by a dynamic cast of characters and a strong, revenge-driven conflict. Adding to the excitement is a return visit by Luke, Flint, and Cleve MacKenzie. You will enjoy watching the hero and heroine battle their feelings for each other as they come to realize their own personal dreams. ~Jolene Ehret for Bookbug on the Web

Leigh, Ana - THE MACKENZIES: PETER  (Avon - 1998) (3+)
Angeleen MacKenzie longs for a life away from the Colorado ranch where she was born, and her talent for art and music provides the means for escape—an escape she gladly makes when she leaves the Roundhouse to study in St. Louis. After the headstrong young woman wins a singing contest that she entered on a whim, the reasons for her being in the city are forgotten as her infatuation with the sophisticated "judge" of the contest grows. She soon discovers, however, that Mr. Edward Emory is quite an actor. On the night she informs him of her pregnancy, his profession of love and offer of a bright future disappear—just as quickly as he does. Finding herself alone and afraid, she turns to Peter Gifford for help.

Giff is ten years older than "Angel," but he's been protecting her...and loving her ever since she was born. Now as foreman of the Roundhouse ranch, he continues to love, albeit silently, and protect her and the unborn child by offering a marriage of convenience. Angel accepts his offer and they return to Colorado, but it will be a long time before they become man and wife in more than name only, and they will have to face a lot of heartache and misunderstandings along the way.

This latest offering in the ongoing MacKenzie saga will entertain readers who enjoy a romantic romp through the Old West. Although the story was a bit convoluted at times, and some of the subplots were abruptly dropped without resolution, the last few chapters gave a satisfying glimpse of past characters, along with a hint about where the next book will go. Fans of this series will no doubt enjoy getting to know Peter and Angel as their relationship changes and loves grows. ~Connie Ramsdell for Bookbug on the Web

Leigh, Jo - ONE WICKED NIGHT  (Harl. Tempt. 674) (4)
Michael Craig might look and sound like Prince Charming, but beneath the handsome surface is a ruthless corporate raider. Determined to enjoy a long Cinderella weekend in New Orleans, shy researcher Emma Roberts finds she has no defense against her feelings when Michael suddenly turns up at her restaurant table and she recognizes the instant chemistry between them. But true to his plan, Michael easily seduces the secrets from her that lead to a buyout of the company for which she works. Feeling utterly betrayed and emotionally battered when she returns to work and learns the truth about Michael's identity, Emma ignores the urge to run away from her hurt and, with the help of her friends and co-workers, makes a plan of her own. Revenge will be oh, so sweet...if she can just ignore the sexual sparks that fly whenever she and Michael are together.

ONE WICKED NIGHT is an enjoyable, sensual book—a one-sitting read. There are a couple of subplots involving family ties and past history that, had they been explored, would have made it all the more enjoyable for me. But I recommend this book to readers who desire a short, sexy, contemporary romp that focuses primarily on the relationship between the hero and heroine. ~Connie Ramsdell for Bookbug on the Web
