Licata, Jenni - UNVEILED (Leisure - 7/99) (4+) On his way to the royal quarters, however, there is a unexpected development. Alex discovers a man who has been murdered, and standing over the dead body is La Phantom. She disavows any knowledge of the murder, and believing she is innocent, Alex sends her to his carriage so his driver can escort her home. During his audience with Queen Anne, the stage is set for more danger. Alex is asked to infiltrate a gang of blooded rakes who call themselves the Mohocks—a gang out to assassinate the Queen, according to rumor. After he explains that he doesn't feel qualified to be a spy, his loyalty to England is questioned. He has no choice but to offer his services, knowing that a refusal would be the same as betraying his country. When Alex later locates his driver, he learns that La Phantom never used his coach. Further inquiry leads him to discover that she is actually Lady Victoria "Tori" Wynter, daughter of the Marquess of Middleham. And the person she has been desperately seeking is her brother Charles, whom she fears is running with the Mohocks. After several encounters, Alex and Tori can't deny the strong attraction they feel for each other, but our hero's reputation with women causes Tori to be wary. For his part, Alex believes he is not worthy of Tori's love. Their hearts rule in the end, however—they fall in love, even though their future together seems dim. Not only are their lives in danger because of betrayal and the threat of the Mohocks, but the English monarchy is in peril, as well. UNVEILED, the author's debut novel, is a fast-paced, engaging romance with a very likable hero and heroine. Alex is honorable, loyal and caring, while Tori is spirited and tenacious. Together they provide for some very passionate, and even amusing, moments. Several interesting secondary characters, both good and evil, add depth to the intricate plot as the author sweeps us away to an exciting time period, filled with danger and intrigue. Jenni Licata unveils her shining talent in this highly entertaining and sensual romance! ~Sharon Laird for Bookbug on the Web
