Manning, Jackie - SILVER HEARTS  (Harlequin Historical - 3/99) (4)
Setting: 1867 Nevada
When Noelle's father dies, she promises to locate her Uncle Marcel and give him the family's magic props. On her journey west to find him, the wheel to her wagon breaks and her driver leaves to get help. A stranger arrives in his place and informs her that the driver's dead body had been found.

Thus, the first meeting between Noelle and Luke is not under the best of terms—with her aiming a rifle at his body, while he tries explaining away the death of her driver and the threat of Indians at any moment!

After Luke fixes the wheel, Noelle insists on taking all of her belongings with them to Crooked Creek—Indians or not. This results in a slow wagon ride, but she is determined to have her way...and lets him know immediately that she is not a pushover. As they journey to Crooked Creek, her conversation alerts Luke to the fact that Uncle Marcel is the same man he has been searching for—the weasel who swindled him.

Jackie Manning delivers an enjoyable story about a feisty, headstrong woman and a loner with a secret past, who doesn't want to become serious with any female. It's fun to discover how Noelle gets the hero to change his mind. SILVER HEARTS is a humorous western romance with a heroine you will cheer for, villains who turn out to be good guys, and plenty of adventure!  ~Carol Carter for Bookbug on the Web

Mansfield, Elizabeth - PHANTOM LOVER  (1979) (4)
The hero is reclusive after losing his leg in the war. He pretends to be a ghost and only appears to the heroine. This is an older Regency, but worth looking for!  ~Karen W. (kwheless@rockland.net)

March, Meredith - ROCKY RIDGE MAN, THE  (HT 743 - 8/99) (3)
Facing foreclosure of his ranch, Clint Silver answers an ad for auditions to become a spokesman for Rocky Ridge Blue Jeans. Burying negative feelings for the modeling industry and harboring a secret that could very well cause the entire ad campaign to blow up, he sets out to snag the assignment coveted by most of the male models of Canada.

Sonya Duncan is eager to corral a Vice Presidency at Zenith Communications and she can accomplish this fairly soon if the Rocky Ridge campaign is successful. While her prize candidate, Clint Silver, happens to have the best buns in Calgary, he also has a past that could destroy her plans. With her career on the line, Sonya allows herself to be swept away by Clint's outrageous proposal that he model the Rocky Ridge Jeans anonymously.

Sonya and Clint work together and manage to pull off an advertising coup, which restores him to financial respectability and almost assures her of a promotion. In the process, both become aware of the sizzling attraction between them, but this presents a conflict. The sexy model wants her in his bed, but a long-term commitment is an impossibility. Sonya also knows that good-looking cowboys don't hang around for long...and she's only asking for trouble if she gives in to her feelings.

Debut author Meredith March turns up the heat with THE ROCKY RIDGE MAN. Although the story line is weak, she delivers a romance with witty dialogue and plenty of sexual tension. Readers who enjoy a sensual read with a clever heroine and a steamy hero will be pleased. ~Olivia Holton for Bookbug on the Web

Marks, Kathy - SEDUCING SYDNEY (Silh. Yours Truly - 1996) (4+)
Sydney is going to pay the nasty slimeball who is blackmailing her sister, and then get out of Las Vegas as soon as possible. But a chance encounter with Jack, a former gambler and jewel thief who intrigues her, changes her mind. This book is hilarious!  ~Karen W. (kwheless@rockland.net)
