McNaught, Judith - NIGHT WHISPERS  (Pocket Hardcover - 1998) (4)
Having been critical of Judith McNaught's hardcover debut, REMEMBER WHEN—the only book by her I haven't enjoyed—I was delighted to find that she has returned to form with NIGHT WHISPERS, which I stayed up all night to finish. I thought it had an absorbing and imaginative plot, nicely drawn characters, a more interesting setting than McNaught's other contemporary romances, less corn at the end, and thankfully none of that annoyingly shallow brand-name-Hollywood and other jet-set-celebrity name dropping that grated on my nerves in the otherwise excellent PARADISE and PERFECT. And while NIGHT WHISPERS was less fully developed than PARADISE or PERFECT—and certainly could have been longer—in the unresolved love-hate relationship between the heroine's police partner and her best friend, I definitely detect a sequel. ~Elena P.

McNaught, Judith - REMEMBER WHEN  (Pocket - 1997) (4)
This is a story about a poor little rich girl and a rich little poor boy. There is a sweetness and a caring spirit about Diana, despite her wealthy upbringing. She develops a friendship of sorts with Cole, who works for a rich family (in their stable). He is rescued from a terrible homelife by his uncle, and through his help, Cole is able to leave the stable and complete his college education. Many years pass, and Cole becomes a very rich and powerful man. Cole and Diana accidentally meet again at a charity ball. They agree to a marriage of convenience, but that changes in a hurry—watch this romance bloom!  Diana helps Cole get rid of some old hurts, and through her love and caring, he heals. This is a very good book. McNaught always delivers. ~Carol C. (angelca@ibm.net)

McNaught, Judith - UNTIL YOU  (Pocket - 1995) (3)
An American teacher with amnesia is mistaken for the unknown fiancée of a British lord. This somewhat convoluted plot is reasonably well handled by a writer whose books are generally readable and romantic (except for REMEMBER WHEN—a read dud, in my opinion). ~Elena P.

McRae, Melinda - SWEET REWARDS  (Topaz - 1996) (4+)
Julia is a determined suffragette, and David is a dedicated Member of Parliament. Their attraction, both physical and intellectual, keeps drawing them together. A fascinating book about two dedicated and interesting people, who (usually) manage to respect each others' views without hating each other. ~Karen W. (kwheless@rockland.net)

Medeiros, Teresa - NOBODY'S DARLING  (Bantam - 1998) (4+)
Rollicking western adventure with a colorful cast of characters:  Esmerelda Fine, a prissy Easterner with lots of spunk;  Billy Darling, a devilishly charming gunslinger;  his hell-raising brothers, the Darling Gang;  their cantankerous shotgun-toting mama;  and Sadie, the basset hound with personality plus. Set in Calamity, New Mexico, this romance is brimming with humor and sassy dialogue, with a story line that never lags. NOBODY'S DARLING is pure entertainment—spirited and fun, full of adventure, but also heartwarming and sensual. A winning combination. ~June F. (bookbug@oocities.com)
