Meryl Sawyer - Darlene Scalera

Sawyer, Meryl - HIDEAWAY, THE  (Zebra - 1997) (2)
Tired contemporary tale of a poor, little rich girl falling in love with a wrong-side-of-the-tracks hellraiser. They are separated by tragedy and return to town years later with something to prove to the townspeople and each other. They're still in lust, of course, and when she's accused of murder and he's the sheriff, well, he's got to prove her innocence. Nothing Sawyer has written has impressed me as much as A KISS IN THE DARK, but I keep reading her books because I like her fast-paced writing style. HIDEAWAY has a few pretty good moments, but I sure wish she'd written a few more. ~Kathy G. (kathy@cs.utexas.edu)

Scalera, Darlene - MAN IN A MILLION  (Harl. American 807 - 1/00) (4)
Setting: Newport, Rhode Island
Aimee Rose receives an offer she can't refuse. Vivian Tremont, matriarch of the wealthy Tremont family, wants Aimee to marry her son Shawn, who will become the sole heir of the family fortune once the marriage is official. However, there's one catch. First, Aimee must seduce Shawn's half-brother, Colin, the illegitimate Tremont son.

Aimee can't understand why Vivian would make such a proposal. As the daughter of a prostitute, her family background isn't the type for a rich clan like the Tremonts. But Aimee has her own agenda and decides to use Vivian's offer to her own advantage. She is determined to become one of the top fashion designers in the country, and Vivian's connections will help her accomplish this. At the same time, she intends to show the wealthy Tremonts that money can't buy everyone.

Colin Tremont remembers the stories about his gold-digging mother and sees Aimee as a carbon copy, but he plans to beat her at her own game. Known all of his life as the black sheep of the Tremont family, Colin never knew any real love—and there is no way he'll believe Aimee is in love with him. But it's not long before Colin and Aimee discover they have very real feelings for each other. How can they learn to trust one another when they are each up to their own schemes and unable to decipher truth from fiction? Will they succeed or be devastated?

Up-and-coming author, Darlene Scalera, creates a delightful marriage of convenience tale with an added twist. This is a story of a power struggle between the elite and the underdog, and readers will laugh out loud at Aimee's antics as she takes a few shots at the mighty Tremonts. MAN IN A MILLION is a refreshing, fast-paced romance that will brighten up any afternoon. ~Yvonne Hering for Bookbug on the Web
