St. John, Cheryl - JOE'S WIFE  (Harlequin Historical - 3/99) (4+)
Tye Hatcher, the illegitimate son of a prostitute, returns to his hometown of Aspen Grove, Colorado after serving in the War Between the States only to find that the narrow-minded townspeople continue to treat him as if he were the lowest scum on earth. Even though there are job openings, no one will hire him except the local saloon owner who needs a piano player. After all the rejection, Tye cannot believe his sudden good fortune when Meg, a woman he has admired since boyhood, urges him to accept a wagon ride home one evening.

Widowed when her husband Joe was killed in the war, Meg Telford is now being coerced into moving in with her in-laws and selling her ranch, which she has been fighting to save. Ignoring their predictions that she will fail, and determined to keep her dream alive, she decides to marry the only able-bodied man in town—Tye Hatcher. Although Meg continues to struggle with the ghost of Joe, Tye agrees to the marriage, but with certain conditions of his own. After they are wed, Meg learns firsthand how it feels to be ostracized by an entire town...and she empathizes with her new husband, whom she is beginning to admire.

JOE'S WIFE is a moving story about a man who battles with low self-esteem and a woman who has difficulty letting go of the past. The author skillfully develops their relationship into a loving and caring union as she delves into their thoughts, hearts and souls. This story will touch you as you realize how the hero and heroine are affected by small-town prejudice and narrow-minded thinking. I was irritated with Meg's character because it took her so long to acknowledge her feelings, but she redeems herself before the ending. I absolutely loved the hero because he exhibited honesty, tenderness, warmth and passion, despite the way he was treated. Tye Hatcher is all man without being macho, and he teaches sweet Meg how to become all woman! Cheryl St. John has written another winning romance that deserves a place on your keeper shelf. ~Carol Carter for Bookbug on the Web

St. John, Tina - LORD OF VENGEANCE  (Fawcett - 7/99) (4+)
Witnessing the slaying of his mother, and left for dead after a siege of his family castle, ten-year-old Gunnar Rutledge vows revenge. Gunnar hates Baron Luther d'Bussy, a ruthless warlord, both for the death of his mother and for killing his father in a tourney not a year before.

Thirteen years later, the demon-possessed young man believes vengeance is at hand when the Baron hosts a tourney. Our hero's life is about to change, however, when circumstances result in his abduction of the Baron's daughter, Raina, to be held for ransom in order to get to her father. She cannot credit Gunnar's tales about the monstrous warlord, believing her father to be a gentle and loving person, and her heart is nearly torn in two when she realizes she has fallen in love with her kidnapper.

LORD OF VENGEANCE, the debut title for Tina St. John, is a dramatic enactment of medieval times. This author's descriptive use of words will send you back in time as you experience the lifestyle and pageantry of the era. You will find adventure, hateful villains, steamy sensuality mixed with tenderness, and a hero and heroine to love. LORD OF VENGEANCE is a book you'll savor and want to read again and again—definitely a keeper. ~Carol Carter for Bookbug on the Web
