Stuart, Anne - DARK AND STORMY NIGHT, A (Harl. Amer. 702) (4) Katie Flynn is driving up the coast of Maine during a violent storm. A tree falls across the road blocking her way. She thinks she sees a woman in a white gown beckoning to her, and she follows the woman to a huge, sinister looking mansion on a cliff facing the ocean. This gothic story involves a dark, unfriendly hero who is also a selkie, two evil villians, and some friendly ghosts who add a a heartwarming touch. A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT also has some humor in it, and I really liked Katie's quirky personality. A very exciting, unique book. ~Ellen L. (ellenL1@hotmail.com)
Stuart, Anne - LORD OF DANGER (Zebra - 1997) (4) Alyce, the half sister of a powerful nobleman, Richard the Fair, has been raised in a convent with her sister. She is considered to be plain but clever, while her sister is beautiful. A marriage is arranged by their brother between Alyce and his dark wizard, Simon of Navarre. This book had wonderful touches of dark mystery and eeriness. Simon is a mysterious character who has turned to darkness after having become jaded by war and the cruelty of man. The beautiful thing about this story is that Simon falls in love with Alyce despite her not being gorgeous like her sister. She actually becomes beautiful to him. Simon is an intriguing and fascinating character, while Alyce is likable and the reader is able to sympathize with her. I enjoyed this book so much that I wanted to bawl when I finished it simply because the story was over. The only thing that I didn't really care for was the emphasis on the sister's story. I felt like there should have been more written on Simon and Alyce. Her sister did not interest me very much. Oh, but I loved Simon! ~Nicole H. (Alswitha@yahoo.com)
Stuart, Anne - NIGHTFALL (Onyx - 1995) (4) A very intense read that kept me turning the pages. Stuart is a master at plot twists and steamy sensuality. The hero is a dark, brooding, enigmatic man with a secret—a secret which directs the way his life is lived. Until, of course, the perfect heroine comes along and changes his outlook. ~Connie (C1rams@aol.com)
Stuart, Anne - SHADOW LOVER (Onyx - 1999) (4+) Carolyn has never felt like part of the wealthy MacDowell family, even though she came to them as a young foster child. Now, at thirty-one years of age, she has returned home to care for Aunt Sally, who is the closest thing to a mother that Carolyn has ever known. When Aunt Sally's son Alex, who disappeared eighteen years ago, suddenly appears at his mother's bedside, Carolyn believes he is an impostor and only after the money. After all, Carolyn had followed him on that fatal night long ago and witnessed someone shoot him. She has dreamed of that horror ever since; but when she carefully relives the eighteen-year-old murder in her mind now, she realizes that she is unsure about the disposition of the body. Did Alex really die, or is it possible that the handsome stranger—for whom Carolyn feels a very familiar attraction—is the long-lost Alex? After many twists and turns, long buried secrets and lies emerge. As always, Anne Stuart writes a compelling romantic suspense with excellent pacing and character development. The reader wavers back and forth, trying to decide if Alex could really be the missing heir. Early on we discover he is in cahoots with a family member, but, even so, he seems to know many details about Alex's early life. SHADOW LOVER has everything you would expect in a page-turner: an exciting plot, darkness and suspense, and a hot romance. I loved it! ~Marilyn H. (mlyn@jps.net) ~Marilyn H. (mlyn@jps.net)
