Vaughan, Vivian - CHANCE OF A LIFETIME  (Zebra - 3/99) (5)
Apache reared Tremayne is desperate to belong to someone because he doesn't fit in either the Apache or white man's world. Then he meets Sabrina Bolton, daughter of a soldier at Fort Davis. Tremayne is a fabulous hero, and the love scenes in this book are sensuous and wonderful. Sabrina is a genuine, fun heroine and her mother is a hoot, too. CHANCE OF A LIFETIME makes you laugh and cry. ~Elaine C. (elainerc@juno.com)

Vinyard, Rebecca - DIVA  (Petals Of Life - 1998) (3)
Theadora Harwood Dietrich is an opera singer stuck in an impossible marriage. For the past year she has been married to composer Fredrick Dietrich and has yet to experience wedded bliss. Taking matters in hand after one of her concerts at the Vienna Opera House, she confronts her husband and demands an annulment. Fredrick, a man lacking any outstanding talent, sees his meal ticket about to get away from him so he attempts to frighten his wife by responding in an abusive manner. Shamed before the stagehands, Thea runs and hides in one of the stage props, but soon discovers she is not alone. She has stumbled upon 12-year-old Mortimer Blackwell, son of Marquis Brantly Blackwell, who is hiding from his father.

Mischievous Mortimer, who witnessed the diva's humiliating confrontation, appoints himself as her new protector—that is, until his father can step in and take over. Thea admits that having the Marquis and his son in her life is one of the best things to happen to her, but there is still the matter of her marriage. After she experiences a moment of passion with Brant, she is more determined than ever to rid herself of the man who has caused her such misery. On the advise of a friend, Thea barges in on her husband at a private "men's hall." Armed with a pistol (in what turns out to be a hilarious confrontation), she again requests her freedom—only to find out her marriage is a concocted hoax!  Devastated and on the brink of retreating in shame, Thea is again rescued by the Marquis.

DIVA is an eighteenth-century romance that explores an opera diva's search for love and security among society's crême de la crême. First-time author Rebecca Vinyard has created memorable characters in Thea and Brant. Their exploits on the road to finding happiness, while sometimes humorous, reveal the burning desire they have for each other and unlock hidden secrets harbored by both. DIVA is a story rich in love and laughter, which provided this reader with several hours of contented escapism. ~Livia Holton for Bookbug on the Web
