The Count of Monte Cristo
- Edward Dantes comes to port in charge of the Pharaon since the captain had died on the trip.
- Danglers, the ship's supercargo, is very jealous of Dantes and plans to frame him for being a conspirator for the banished Napolean.
- After checking in with the ship's owner, Morrel, Dantes goes to his father to check on him. He then rushes to see his beloved Mercedes.
- Caderousse, Danglers, and Fernand meet and discuss Dantes and his eminent future as the Pharaon's captain.
- Dantes and Mercedes are enjoying their betrothal feast when police come and arrest Dantes, giving no explanation. Morrel sends someone to find out what happened.
- Dantes meets with Villefort, a lawyer, who is responsible for his case, and asks Dantes about a letter he had delivered for his late captain. Villefort assures Dantes that the whole affair was a mistake and sends him with some guards to the local jail until everything could be worked out.
- Dantes is awakened and taken away to Chateau D'If, a very notorious prison on a small island.
- Dantes argues with the warden and comes close to madness, so he is put into a solitary cell in the dungeon.
- At first, Dantes refuses his ration of bread and water and plans to starve himself, but soon enough he starts to hear scratching on the other side of the wall. These sounds, as he later discovers, are those of a fellow prisoner trying to escape.
- Faria, an Italian scholar, is the other prisoner. He is extremely intelligent and has made many tools out of pieces of his cot, bones from his food, and other miscellaneous items.
- Faria teaches Dantes everything he knows. Edward learns several languages, the cultures of many other places, and most importantly, the location of the greatest treasure in the world on a little island called Monte Cristo.
- Faria is seized by "attacks" twice, each causing damage to his body and making him lose movement in some limbs. He is revived both times by an elixir that he showed Dantes how to administer.
- A third attack ends Faria's life and ruins the duo's plan of escape. Dantes takes Faria's place in his body bag, hoping to be able to dig himself out of the grave.
- Instead of being placed in a grave, Dantes is thrown into the ocean. Thanks to his superior swimming skills, he is able to get away before the prison realizes he is gone.
- After pretending to have been shipwrecked, Dantes manages to get passage to the nearest port, Leghorn. He realizes he had been imprisoned for 14 years.
- He joins with a crew of smugglers until he has savings enough to buy a boat and head out for the Isle of Monte Cristo.
- Dantes gets to the island and finds the treasure, which is all together equivalent to about 100 million dollars or more. Using these riches, he reemerges as the Count of Monte Cristo.
- Under the pseudonym of Abbe Busoni, the Count visits Caderousse and discovers all of the underhanded workings that took place to imprison Dante and found the whereabouts of all those whom he had known. Since Caderousse had played no part in Dante's capture, he was rewarded with a huge diamond valued at several thousand franks.
- The Count assumes the name of Sinbad the Sailor and gives Morrel a large diamond to use as his daughter's dowry and a large sum of money to be used to get back on his feet again.
- Franz d'Epinay and Albert de Morcerf are enjoying Rome and meet the Count, who offers them great hospitality during the carnival.
- Bandits kidnap Albert and the Count, who is known and respected by them, arranges Albert's release. He is eternally grateful and offers to show him Paris whenever he was there. The Count takes him up on that offer and arranges to be there in the spring.
- While in Paris, Monte Cristo calls on Danglers, now a banker, and arranges to have an unlimited line of credit opened with him.
- Monte Cristo visited with the Morrels, Maximilian and his sister Julie for a while and then called on the Villeforts.
- Villefort's daughter, Valentine, is in love with Maximilian Morrel. Her grandfather, who is mute, is her only real friend in the world.
- M. Noirtier, Valentine's grandfather writes her out of his will because he does not wish her to marry Franz as Villefort intends for her to.
- Monte Cristo manipulates the newspaper to make Danglers make bad investments and lose a million francs. Monte Cristo sees to it that Danglers consistently loses money.
- Valentine's grandparents die.
- Maximilian and Valentine plan to elope, but that becomes unnecessary when M. Noirtier tells Franz that it was he who killed Franz's father. Noirtier gives the overjoyed couple his blessing.
- Cavalcanti, a friend of Monte Cristo's woos Danglers' daughter Eugenie away from Albert, her suitor.
- Noirtier's servant is struck by a fit from drinking poisonous lemonade meant for his master and dies. Valentine is named as the murderer of the servant as well as her other grandparents.
- A trial is held to determine Albert's father's role in the overthrow of Janina. It was Albert's father who had done this and Haydee, a witness, recognized this. He was found guilty.
- Albert rushes to challenge Danglers, who has had his hand in affairs of Janina. He learns that all Danglers had done had been at the advice of Monte Cristo. He rushes to face the Count.
- He challenges the Count who promises to return the glove wrapped round a bullet.
- Mercedes knows the Count's true identity and comes to him begging that he not kill her son.
- Albert learns the reason behind Dantes' humiliation of the Morcerf name and they are again friends.
- The Count takes his revenge on Villefort by driving him insane and Danglers by ruining him. He fulfills his promise to Maximilian that he should wed Valentine. He takes leave of all of his friends, leaving only his house as a wedding present and his best wishes upon them.
