Flush
Character List
Flush is Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s dog. He is also the main character of the story. He was a very human sensitive dog who helped Barrett when she needed him most. He was one of her closest friends. She could not be without him. Even though he was of a high breed he was a very kind, humble dog.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning is Flush’s owner. She is of course a famous writer. She is an invalid and with Flush’s help becomes a completely different person. Flush was very important to Barrett.
Robert Browning is Barrett’s husband. At first Flush did not like Browning, but he realized that Browning was a part of Barrett . Flush could never hate anything that she loved. The two became friends.
Miss Mitford was Flush’s original owner. She adored Flush but had to give him away for money purposes. Barrett and Mitford were friends.
Mr. Barrett was Barrett’s father. He was a bitter old man. Flush was really scared of him. He would not pay to have Flush returned when he was stolen
Wilson is the maid. She takes care of Flush. She is also a friend.

Chronology
- The ancestry of the Cocker Spaniel dates back to Spain.
- Flush’s family lived in the house of the Mitfords.
- It is likely that Flush was born some time early in the year 1842. He is probably a descendant of Tray.
- The Mitfords lost all of their money. Flush was sympathetic to his mistress.
- Flush became a father.
- Miss Mitford refused to sell Flush. She decided to give him to Elizabeth Barrett. He was worthy of her.
- Flush was overwhelmed by the extravagant house of the Barrett’s.
- Miss Mitford left him and Flush felt very alone.
- Barrett and Flush were immediately friends and he took his place on the rug at her feet.
- He spent most of his time in the bedroom but once a week Barrett and her sister went shopping and Flush accompanied them.
- At Regent’s Park Flush learned that dog’s must be lead on chains. That summer he also learned that dogs are not equal, but different.
- He decided that her was a high class dog.
- Flush and Barrett became so close that he was willing to give up his freedom to lie by her side.
- They could not communicate with words which led to misunderstanding and a strange intimacy.
- Once or twice a week someone would come visit Barrett like Mrs. Jameson or Mr. Kenyon.
- Flush was scared of Mr. Barrett.
- Flush was no longer a puppy.
- Barrett waited for letters from the "hooded man." As the letters came more regularly Barrett started to change,
- On May 21 the "hooded man" came to see Barrett. It was Mr. Browning. Flush was ignored throughout their meeting and did not understand the way Barrett was acting.
- Barrett even began to walk around. Flush’s old longings revived such as chasing partridges and feeling the sun.
- Flush did not like Browning and was sure a change was coming.
- He bit Browning. Barrett slapped Flush’s ear and said she no longer loved him.
- July 21st Flush attacked Browning again.
- Flush realized the reason he could not kill Browning was because he loved Barrett and he was part of her.
- Barrett forgave Flush and he was no longer against the couple but was for them.
- Flush went shopping with Barrett without his chain on and was stolen.
- Whenever a dog was stolen Mr. Taylor was the person to talk to. It would cost Barrett six and a half guinea to have Flush returned to them. Mr. Barrett refused to pay.
- Flush was a prisoner in what he considered a dungeon at Whitechapel.
- Barrett hailed a taxi and went to visit Taylor but he was not home. His wife said that Flush would be returned.
- Taylor came to collect the money for Flush and Mr. Barrett made him leave.
- Flush was returned and went straight for his clean water.
- September 12 Barrett dresses herself and left Flush at home. She returned an hour later with a gold ring on her left hand which she hid in a drawer.
- At 4 o’clock on Saturday Barrett picked up Flush and they crept to a waiting cab. they went to Pisa.
- Pisa had very different dogs than London. There were no high breed dogs anywhere.
- Flush had changed but so had Barrett.
- She was a different person altogether. She scrambled over rocks, did not hail cabs and love the sun as well as the cold.
- Wilson fell In love with Signor Righi.
- Flush was now friends to all dogs. Barrett no longer needed him as she used to.
- Flush would walk himself through the streets of Florence.
- During a Liberty parade Flush chased a spotted spaniel.
- Flush noticed Barrett was changing. She had a baby. This sent Flush into deep melancholy.
- Flush was given rewards for being nice to the baby and eventually began to return the baby’s affection.
- Flush got fleas and they had to cut off his coat.
- The family went to London. Once again he had to be put on a chain.
- On the steamer to France Flush got sick.
- Flush was an old dog.
- He died in Barrett’s arm.
