Character List
Jean Louise Finch (Scout) is the main character of the story. She is a tom boy who does not want to act like a lady. She looks up to her brother Jem and has a great friend name Dill. Through the book she learns more and more about human nature. As she grows throughout the book she learns that even the scariest things can turn out to be very nice.
Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) is Scout’s brother. He is her playmate and friend. He is older than her and sometimes Scout does not always understand him. He always tries to protect his sister. He is a very good person who as he matures realizes the flaws all humans have.
Atticus Finch is the father of Scout and Jem. He is a lawyer. He does all the things others do not want to do. He takes a case he knows he cannot possibly win. He raises his children as best as he can without a wife. He is a good father and person and instills his good beliefs in his children.
Charles Baker Harris (Dill) is Scout’s best friend and "fiancee". Together they have many wonderful adventures. They learn with and from each other every summer when Dill comes to visit.
Calpurnia is the Finch family cook, maid, and closest thing they have to a mother. She helps raise the children. She is a very good woman.
Aunt Alexandra is Atticus’ sister. She comes to live with the family to try and influence the children. She tries to make Scout more of a lady. She tries very hard and means well even though the children do not always mind her.
Tom Robinson is the black man Atticus defended. A white woman said he raped her. He was found guilty and shot to death while trying to escape.
Mayella Ewell was the girl who said Tom raped her.
Bob Ewell is the girl’s father who tries to get revenge on Atticus by killing his children.
Arthur (Boo) Radley is a man who never leaves his house that intrigues the children. They think he is very scary but in the end he saves the children from Bob Ewell. He is really very nice.
Miss Rachel is Dill’s aunt whom he stays with every summer.
Miss Maudie is a friendly neighbor.
Mrs. Dubose was an old woman who the children read to help her fight an addiction problem before she dies.

Chronology- Jem had broken his arm but it healed and he is still able to play football.
- Looking back the author said it was the Ewell’s fault, but Jem said it started long before
that. It started the first time Dill had come and got the idea of making Boo Radley
come out.
- Could only trace family heritage back to Simon Finch. The men of the family were to
stay on Simon’s homestead or Finch’s Landing. However it was Atticus’ sister,
Alexandra, stayed while they lived in Maycomb.
- Atticus was a lawyer.
- Calpurnia was the cook for the family and watched after the children.
- Their mother died when Scout was two. Jem however was six and missed her sometimes.
- Charles Baker Harris is seven. People call him Dill. He is staying with Aunt Rachel.
- Dill gave them the idea to try and make Boo Radley come out. The Radleys kept to
themselves. Their shutters were always closed and door always locked. Boo Radley
had ganged up with a Cunningham in his teens. He was locked in his house for their
bad behavior.
- Mr. Radley died. Nathan Radley took his place.
- Dill dared Jem to go and touch the Radley house. Jem did and the only thing they
noticed was a inside shutter move.
- Dill left in September.
- Scout started school. Miss Caroline Fisher was her teacher. She told Scout not to let
her father teach her anymore.
- Miss Caroline offered Walter Cunningham money so he could buy lunch but the
Cunningahms had never borrowed anything before and would not start now.
- Miss Caroline patted Scout’s hand with a ruler and made her stand in the corner.
- Scout rubbed Walter’s nose in the dirt but Jem made her stop. Then Jem asked him
to come eat dinner with them. Walter and Atticus talked. Scout got yelled at for
asking Walter why he poured syrup on his food.
- Little Chuck Little had to calm Miss Caroline when she saw a cootie in a boy’s hair.
It was Burris Ewell. The Ewells only come to the first day of school.
- Atticus said you never understand a person until you consider things from their point
of view.
- Scout found two pieces of chewing gum in a knot-hole of a tree in front of the Radley
house.
- The last day of school Jem and Scout found a box with two pennies in it inside the knot-
hole. They were very old Indian-heads.
- Dill arrived. Scout contradicted Jem which made him mad. He pushed her really hard
in the tire and she rolled all the way into the Radley’s yard.
- They began to play a game about Boo Radley which turned into a small play. One day
Atticus caught them playing.
- Dill said Scout was the only girl he would ever love but he and Jem were becoming
closer and did not want to play with a girl. Therefore Scout began spending time with
Maudie Atkinson.
- Miss Maudie said she knew that Boo Radley was still alive because he had not been
carried out yet. He is a foot-washer and they believe that anything that is pleasure is sin.
- Jem and Dill were talking about giving a note to Boo Radley. They were going to put it
into the house through a loose shutter. The note asked him to come out. Atticus almost
caught them. He read the note and told the children to stay away from the house.
- The children said they were going to sit by the fishpool. They went for a walk and then
told Scout to go home they were going to peep in the window of the Radley house.
Scout went with them anyway.
- They could not see so they tried the back window. The step squeaked. Nathan Radley
came out and shot at them. They ran Jem’s pants got caught on the fence so he pulled
them off.
- Atticus asked what happened to the pants and Dill said he had won them while playing
strip poker.
- Jem went back to get the pants. He returned successful.
- Scout started second grade.
- Jem told her that when he went back to get his pants they were folded across the fence
like someone was expecting him to come back. Also the tear had been sewn up.
- They found a ball of gray twine in the knot-hole. They left it there for a few days to see
if it was someone’s hiding place but when the twine was still there they decided that
everything in the knot-hole was their property.
- They found two small images carved in soap. The figures were a boy and girl, Scout
and Jem. Next they found a package of gum. Next a medal for spelling. The best
prize was a pocket watch on a chain with a knife. They wrote the person who filled the
hole a letter of appreciation. Then someone filled the hole with cement.
- Jem cried.
- Mrs. Radley died.
- It started to snow. They made a snowman. It looked like Mr. Avery.
- Miss Maudie’s house caught on fire. Her house collapsed in flames.
- They went home and had cocoa. Atticus noticed that Scout had a blanket around her
that was not hers. Boo Radley had put the blanket around her and she had not even
noticed.
- Miss Maudie was not too upset about her house burning down. She said it probably
started in the flue in the kitchen.
- Cecil Jacobs made Scout forget her promise not to fight. He had made fun of Atticus.
- Atticus was defending a negro, Tom Robinson. He said if he did not defend him then
he could not represent the county in legislature.
- Christmas came. The good things were Uncle Jack and the tree the bad was Aunt
Alexandra. They went to Finch’s Landing every Christmas.
- Uncle Jack came Christmas Eve. He told her not to use bad words.
- They got air rifles for Christmas. Then they went to Finch’s Landing.
- Scout had to play with Francis. Aunt Alexandra wanted Scout to wear dresses and act
like a lady. Francis called Atticus a bad name. Scout held him in the kitchen and then
beat him up. Uncle Jack made Scout mad by putting her on the ground.
- Scout told Uncle Jack that he should have listened to her side of the story. She then
told him and he was sorry. Later Scout heard Uncle Jack and Atticus talking but he did
not tell Atticus why she had hit Francis.
- Atticus did not do anything exciting to Scout.
- Atticus told them to only shoot tin cans and to never kill a mockingbird.
- One Saturday Scout and Jem went exploring with their rifles. While out they saw a sick
dog. Calpurnia said it had gone mad and called Atticus. Mr. Heck Tate, the sheriff
came. Cal and the kids went inside. Atticus shot the dog with one shot. Scout now had
something to be proud of him about.
- Jem told Scout not to tell anyone about it.
- Scout and Jem began to go the business section of Maycomb which made them walk
past Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose’s house. Nothing would please her.
- With his birthday money Jem bought a miniature steam engine for himself and a
twirling baton for Scout. Mrs. Dubose called Atticus a bad name and Jem got mad. HE
took the baton and cut the tops off every camellia bush with it.
- Jem went and talked to Mrs. Dubose. He cleaned the mess and apologized. Then she
asked him to read to her everyday. Atticus said he had to.
- Monday Jem went to read to her. While Jem was reading she fell asleep. An alarm
clock went off and they left.
- One month later they realized that the alarm clock went off a few minutes later each
day. One week after that the alarm clock no longer rang and they were released when
she said they could go. Finally she said he did not have to read anymore.
- The same day she died. Atticus told them that the fits were because she was addicted to
her medicine. Jem’s reading was a distraction from the medicine.
- She left Jem a candy box with a camellia on the lid. He threw the boxing the e fire but
kept the camellia.
- Jem was twelve and began to change.
- Summer came and Dill had not come. Scout received a letter from him that said he had
a new father and had to stay but he would come back to marry her.
- Atticus had to go so the children would have to go to church with Cal. She dressed
them all up and they went.
- They felt like they were not wanted there. There were no hymn books. The people
gave money to help out Tom Robinson’s wife.
- People thought Tom had raped an Ewell girl.
- Cal said that Scout could visit her at her house.
- Sitting on the front porch of their house was Aunt Alexandra.
- Aunt Alexandra had come to stay with the family for a while. Scout could not find
anything to say to her.
- Maycomb welcomed Aunty. It seemed as though she had always lived there. She
always said that people’s problems were form the heritage.
- Aunty asked Atticus to explain that they were Finch’s and should be proud and know
their family heritage. This was so they might have an idea of who they were and behave
accordingly.
- Everyone was talking about the Finch family.
- Aunty said Scout could not go to Cal’s house. Aunty wanted to let Cal go, but Atticus
would not allow it. After all Cal was the closest thing the children had to a mother.
- Jem told Scout not to antagonize Aunty. He was always telling her what to do. This
made Scout mad and they fought.
- Scout went to bed but stepped on something that felt like a snake. Jem came to find it
but he only found Dill.
- Dill had ran away from home. Jem told Atticus Dill was there. Dill ate lots of food and
then spent the night.
- Dill ran away because his parents were not interested in him.
- Dill wanted he and Scout to get a baby. They dreamed about where babies come from.
- Dill could stay.
- Some men wanted to see Atticus outside. They talked about the trial. The men drew
nearer to Atticus then Jem said he had a phone call. The men left.
- Jem was scared. He said someone might hurt Atticus.
- They moved Tom to the Maycomb jail.
- Atticus left the house with a long electrical extension cord with a light bulb on the end.
He said he would not be back until the children were in bed.
- Later the children went downtown after Atticus. He was not in his office. He was
sitting outside the jail with the light burning overhead. The children hid out of his view.
- Four cars pulled up men got out of the cars. They were going to hurt someone.
- Scout ran to Atticus. He commanded Jem to go home, but Jem would not budge.
- Scout recognized Mr. Cunningham and talked to him. At first he did not respond but at
last he talked. then the men left. Tom was safe.
- Atticus said the men would have just hurt him a little. It took an eight year old to bring
them to their senses.
- Today was the trial. Jem, Scout, and Dill went to watch. They sat with Reverend Sykes
in the colored balcony.
- Judge Taylor was the judge of the trial.
- Heck Tate went on the witness stand.
- Tate told what he had found when he arrived at the Ewell house. He said she had a
black right eye.
- Mr. Bob Ewell took the stand. He agreed that it was Mayella’s right eye that was black.
Ewell was left handed.
- Mayella Violet Ewell took the stand. She said she called Tom inside the fence to bust a
chiffarobe. She went inside the house to get him a nickel and then he was inside too.
He attacked her. She began to holler and then Ewell came home. She could not
however remember if Tom had hit her. Then she remembered he had and in the right
eye.
- Tom stood up his left arm was crippled he could not have possibly beat Mayella.
- Tom took the stand.
- Tom said that Mayella said she had something for him to do in the house. He noticed
that all of the children were gone. She had saved money and the children were out
eating ice cream. She told him to get something down off the top of the chiffarobe. She
then grabbed his legs, pulled him off the chair and jumped on him. Then she kissed
him.
- Ewell saw through the windows what happened.
- Tom got scared and ran home. He did not rape her.
- Mr. Gilmer cross-examined Tom.
- Dill ran out of the courtroom crying. He said he could not stay in there.
- They sat beside a tree and talked. Mr. Dolphus Raymond was on the other side of the
tree.
- Raymond let Dill drink out of his paper bag. It was Coca-Cola in the bag not liquor like
everyone in the town had thought. He did this so the town would not criticize his home
because he was just a drunk.
- Scout and Dill returned to the courtroom.
- Jem thought that they would win. Atticus was going over his final statements.
- Cal was walking up the front aisle.
- Cal gave Atticus a note that said his children had been missing since noon. Mr.
Underwood said they were in the colored balcony.
- Atticus said they could come back to the courthouse after supper to hear the verdict.
- After many hours the jury returned. Tom was found guilty.
- Jem cried with anger. He said it was not right.
- The next day the family received all kinds of food from people who appreciated what
Atticus had done.
- That morning Bob Ewell stopped Atticus, spat in his face, and said he would get him
back.
- Scout did not know why Atticus did not just shoot him.
- Atticus said that Tom was safe for now.
- Jem did not understand people.
- Aunty said Scout could not play with Walter because he was white trash. This upset
Scout. She did not understand. She thought there was only one kind of people.
- Jem decided that Boo Radley stayed inside because he wanted to.
- Jem took Dill to Barker’s Eddy to teach him to swim. This left Scout with Cal and
Aunty and her friends. She helped Cal load the trays and then carried the tray in. Aunty
asked her to stay. She listened to them talk.
- Atticus came home. He said Tom was in exercise when he went mad. He then tried to
climb the fence. The guards shot him seventeen times. He was dead.
- Cal and Atticus went to tell Helen Robinson the news.
- Scout helped Aunty fill in for Cal.
- Jem said you should not kill things that do not bother you.
- Dill left.
- When Atticus told Helen the news she just fell down in the dirt.
- Tom had been a dead man the minute Mayella opened her mouth.
- School started. Jem was in the seventh grade and Scout was in the third.
- Scout imagined hate it would be like the first time she talked to Boo Radley.
- The children had to tell current events. Cecil told about Hitler who prosecuted the
Jews. Scout did not understand why people hated other people.
- Jem got upset when Scout mentioned the courthouse. Jem was trying to forget it.
- Three things happened in Maycomb.
- First acquired and lost a job in a matter of days. He received welfare every week. He
accused Atticus of taking his job.
- Second Judge Taylor was sitting at home one night when he heard a noise. He found
the screen door swinging open. All he saw was a shadow of his visitor.
- Third Helen was hired by Link Deas, Tom’s former employer. She took the round
about way to work so she would not have to pass in front of the Ewell house. Deas told
Ewell to stop harassing Helen.
- Halloween was to be organized this year. There would be a pageant and games.
- Scout was to be a ham in the play. Her costume was chicken wire shaped to a ham
covered in brown cloth. Only Jem would go to watch her in the play.
- It was warm outside and extremely dark. Someone jumped out from behind the trees
and scared the two; it was Cecil.
- They played a few games and then went to behind the stage to wait for their cues in the
play. Scout fell asleep and missed her cue but walked in at the very end.
- The two began to walk home. Scout forgot her shoes but Jem said she could get them
tomorrow. Jem stopped he thought he had heard something. They thought it was Cecil
playing another trick on them. They heard the footsteps again. They ran. Scout tripped
and rolled the costume squishing around her. Jem screamed. Then there was silence no
one answered to their names. Scout touched someone under the tree. Someone was
carrying Jem home.
- Atticus called Mr. Tate to go and look for the person responsible.
- Jem was okay he had a bump on his head and a broken elbow.
- Mr. Tate arrived at the house. He had found a dress, cloth, and Ewell dead from a
kitchen knife in the ribs,
- Scout told Mr. Tate what happened. The costume had saved her life.
- The person who had carried Jem was no other than Boo Radley.
- Mr. Tate said that Jem had not stabbed Ewell that Ewell had just fell on to the knife.
- Scout led Boo into Jem’s room. He petted Jem’s head. Then Scout walked him home.
- Atticus read a book while Jem and Scout slept. Then he put Scout to bed and stayed in
Jem’s room until Jem woke up the next morning.
