Festival of the Dead

A time of letting go.  Samhain is the beginning of winter in the natural year, and All Saints Day is the first day of 2 day commemoration of the dead who became saints.  On Samhain Eve, it is customary to light bonfires known as tinely fires.

All Souls

Celebration of the dead that did not make sainthood.  It became a church festival in 998 CE.  Prior to that it was celebrated with by the festival of Woden (Odin).  Ceremonial soulcakes were baked and eaten on this day.

Guy Fawkes Night

Celebrated by burning the effigy of a would be regicide.  This continues the early practice of burning effigies of evil spirits from the pat old year.  In cremating them, along with outworn hurts and grievances, the new year is said to be faced in a purer way.  And that it will be free of unnecessary and unhelpful psychic leftovers.

Mania

Roman festival of Mania dedicated to the Manes.  In Celtic tradition, Gwynn ap Nudd allows the door to the underwold to be opened for a day.

Einherjar

This is the full onset of winter.  Hiring fairs used to take place on this day.  In Asatru, the Festival of the Einherjar (warriors) is held.  In Ireland, it is the day of Lunantishees--sprits that guard the holy blackthorn trees.

St. Cecilia's Day is celebrated by music lovers.  She is an aspect of the goddess Artemis Calliste, the Lily of Heaven.

St. Clement

First day of winter according to Julian calendar.  Patron saint of blacksmiths and metal workers.  At the annual blacksmith's feast in Burwash, Sussex, Old Clem was said to stand protectively above the tavern door.
